The ad world chimes in on the mine rescue

The black eye of the two-timing miner hasn’t even begun to heal yet and already opportunistic ads are starting to emerge taking advantage of last week’s global good news story.

This time it is the Aussies who are advertising something that doesn’t appear to be beer. Odd that! Not sure what it is actually. Some kind of iced coffee which requires manliness before you smash a full carton of it against your friend’s head.

Austalian tourism reckons there’s nothing like Australia

By the looks of this ad – traveling through Australia is like taking part in a bad, sterile musical.  And for once, the Aussies agree. But they put it a little different.

Tourism Australia’s new, all singing advertisement has been attacked by audiences for making the nation look like a bunch of tone-deaf bogans, according to the Sydney Morning Herald website. The music especially has not been to everyone tastes, with one post on the media website Mumbrella stating – “the 1970′s called and want their jingle back.” Another calls it “cringeworthily embarrassing” calling it ”bogan pride at its best”. At this point you might be asking – what’s a bogan?

The term bogan (pronounced /ˈboʊɡən/, rhyming with slogan) is Australian and New Zealand English slang, usually pejorative or self-deprecating, for a person who is, or is supposed to be, of a lower-class background and whose characteristics exemplify, often crudely, this background. The speech and mannerisms of a bogan, according to the stereotype, are such as to indicate poor education, a preference for cheap clothing, and uncultured upbringing. ‘Bogans’ tend to reside in outer metropolitan areas or large country towns. It’s weird – this ad for Australian tourism makes us want to do a road trip through South Africa. It looks so polished and characterless that we just want to roll around in Karoo dirt just to take that awkward feeling away.

Australia have been training against wild animals

The Australians have got it all wrong. Obviously what’s happened here is that the Socceroos [the name for the Aussie soccer team..bit like Bafana Bafana] have been talking to their Super 14 rugby teams over a couple of frosties. After a dozen Fosters they literally thought that these poor blokes really do come over here and play rugby against sharks and cheetahs and lions and bulls.

Hence they’ve been practicing against a menagerie of wild animals back home. Pretty damn impressive film making however. The Waratahs are going to have a few more scary war stories to tell this lot when they get back home next week.

Australia want to ban this ad

The same country that so proudly claimed some accolade for having lots of  people pose naked on the steps of the Sydney Opera House [or something shameful like that] is now wanting to ban Pamela Anderson and a female co-worker pouring milk over each other as depicted in this ad.

We don’t think it’s that bad. A standard episode of eGoli used to deliver pound-for-pound more flesh time even on the off days.

It’s perplexing. Then again there is no crime in Australia – so we wouldn’t want the citizen to get any funny ideas about developing a pulse or anything over there and starting any.

The Australians have found another way to forget that there isn’t much to do in Australia by making a bus shelter billboard from 7,563 individual pieces of dice. There is, however, no evidence that you are more likely to touch and drool over it more than if it was printed on vinyl.

That's many minutes in Sydney

Virgin Australia are harnessing the power of Twitter in their latest brand building campaign.

It’s called 4320SYD. The basic idea is that three participants are flown from Los Angeles to Sydney with the goal of exploring the city over a 72 hour period with a camera crew, while using Twitter to update their progress every minute – all 4,320 of them. If they succeed, they each win round-the-world plane tickets.

The participants’ tweets are fed through to the campaign website, which features a ‘tweet wall’ of text and images that acts as a visual depiction of their Australian odyssey.

The three winning friends – Jade, Rob and Bobby – were chosen after they submitted an entry through describing why they deserved a three-day Australian holiday. The second place trio won a six-day holiday in the land of the wallaby. [just kidding]

The @4320SYD account will follow the trio’s Sydney adventure, which begins today.

4320SYD follows 4320LA, a campaign run by V Australia that sent three young Australians to Los Angeles to tweet nonstop for three days. Think of 4320SYD as the reverse.

Sounds a bit like the Amazing Race with a Twitter plugin. Nice!
