Cherryflava wins Daddy Long Legs potjiekos competition with famous lamb pot

Gringo1

Last night, the Cherryflava team took first place in the annual Daddy Long Legs potjiekos competition.
We made our famous lamb and mushroom pot, laced with a bottle of Diemersfontain Pinotage and fresh organic ingredients.

Thanks so much to the Daddy Long Legs and Rabbit in a Hat teams for a brilliant evening and a cracking event and to all the rad companies that sponsored the awesome prizes that we won...prepare yourselves.

It's thanks to this gentlemen that it's toasted bacon and egg sandwiches all round this morning.

[thanks for the ad Francois]

Cherryflava set to win Daddy Long Legs potjiekos competition with famous lamb pot

Lamb

This Thursday [11 June 2009], the Daddy Long Legs boutique hotel [134 Long Street] will be hosting their annual potjiekos competition at the famous hotel. And the great news is that we've been invited to take part in this year's event along with four other teams. [Our apologies here - we had incorrectly mentioned that the contest was being held at the Grand Daddy hotel, but is in fact at the Daddy Long Legs Hotel]

Now, on the surface of it our team could be considered to be heavily handicapped by having a rather prominent English heritage, but underneath the public school exterior lies a regter egter potjie dark horse.
Our weapon of choice for Thursday's battle - a 4-hour lamb and mushroom morsel with a focaccia-style potbrood on the side. Yummy. Lamb is good.

If you're in the area from about 18h00 onwards - pop in and have a beer with us. There will be wine, song and wenches for everyone.

Pic: Shane Warne seems to have snorted a small cat

Low res Shane Warne moustache

Ok, so before you run off to see if your furry kitty has met with its horrific demise at the entrance to ol' Warnie's shnozz - it's not really as bad as this photo would suggest. The ace Aussie spinner is indeed wearing a fake 'stache as part of his IPL team's [the Rajasthan Royals - who are based in Cape Town] marketing campaign.

Global sports brand PUMA, sponsors of IPL champion Rajasthan Royals, have launched a fun campaign to promote the team by encouraging fans to wear giant moustaches.

Fans are encouraged to visit the website www.itgrowsonyou.net where they can download and print a moustache to wear to games. Besides generating a suitably fun atmosphere at 20-20 games, the campaign also enables fans to win Rajasthan Royals t-shirts if they upload their photographs to the It Grows on You fan page on Facebook.

So if you're going to the game tomorrow and wanna get into the essence of the Royals, then get the mo' and fluff the fro'. One time. Good on ya Warnie.

[thanks Doug]

And all that jazz

&Union

If like us you're going to the Cape Town Jazz festival tomorrow night - good on you. If not, it would be a crying shame to allow a mega weekend of jazz in the city pass you by without sampling just a bit of of those soulful jams from with all music is essentially created.

Other than the major festival, please allow us to recommend a quiet dark ale and a touch of class over at Brewery & Union as a stylish alternative. This does however come with a warning.
Once you've experienced this beer salon...there's no turning back. Take the dark pils and see how far the rabbithole goes.

Announcement: The search is over...

Romistern1

...for the new Levi's photographer which was found after a bit of a search on the onesmallseed online network.

The winner, was obviously a professional photographer [Romi Stern] - who blew the field away with her snaps inside one of the Grand Daddy Airstream caravans in Long Street.

Romistern2

Not bad, not bad - but luckily for the other contestants we didn't know about the competition [note to selves - add onesmallseed to RSS feed reader...ASAP].
We would have also gone with the trailer park look, but we'd have shot only on cellphones [pixalates nicely when you enlarge and if they can shoot Slumdog Millionaire on the thing, then...] and pay little respect to correct exposure levels [without touching Photoshop].

Something like:

Grand Daddy Hotel: Cape Town's very own trailer park

GrandDaddy01

Last night we spent a couple of hours at the launch of a brand new trailer park [yeeeehaaaa], which is a new part of the uber-cool Grand Daddy hotel in Long Street.

We met Goldilocks...and this bear - sipped on a few ice cold refreshing Coronas, mingled with Cape Town's glitterati and stared wide-eyed, cellphone camera in hand - at the 7 completely decked out Airsteam vintage caravans that each have their own theme inspired and designed by local artists.

The story of how it came to pass that 7 all-American vintage caravans were plucked from their rural home in northern Ohio USA and made the long voyage to a trendy roof top in Cape Town, is inspirational.

We would suggest that you do yourself a favour and go check out the new digs, the original Daddy Long Legs team have created a little lower down the road, for yourself.
Better still make a booking in 'Pleasantville' or 'The ballad of John and Yoyo' and experience outdoor trailer park living in the Cape Town inner city for yourself.

These pics were shot with our trusty Nokia N78 - but a follow up session with proper flash and the touch of the ol' Nikon is already scheduled.

Brewers & Union: New Cape Town beer salon opens

Citybrew01

Having not visited a 'hair salon' for some time now [must attend to that soon - people are going to start thinking we're homeless] - we instead spent a pleasant Friday afternoon at a 'beer salon', which BTW is by far a better way to get a foamy head.

Citybrew02

The idea behind the 'beer salon'...is beer obviously - but for the well-healed hiding in all of us, it's the subtle dancing of flavas that you get when you pair the establishment's beer with their fine, organic, free-range fare.
As a central city work meeting place - the former vida e caffe founders serve a killer espresso that would make an Italian cry for his mamma - and when the clock hits 9 o' clock you can easily slide over to one of their premium brews, without anyone thinking you belong in an AA group sesssion.

Citybrew03

Thanks very much Rui and Brad for the introduction to our 2009 central city business home-base.
Beer, brainstorming and biscotti just can't be beaten.

2010: Benni left his t-shirt in Greenmarket Square

2010

Hein Koen sent us this pic of a giant bit of laundry that's been hung out to dry in Cape Town's Greenmarket Square.

As Hein says; 'Seems like 2010 is giving someone a nipple stand….' Nipple stand indeed - as well as a solid 'muffin top'. Let's just hope that this is some kind of unofficial guerrilla stunt rather than something more official from organisors hoping to drum up a bit of excitement.

Looks like a bunch of Stellenbosch students have mistakingly chosen a building in Cape Town for a 'vensters' performance. Shocking.
Hopefully officials get it taken down before anybody else seems it and tells somebody overseas. [shudder]

Hot hub for creatives hits Cape Town CBD

Small, affordable, hub-type work spaces are all the rage in more developed economies. The need for  similar office space for creative companies has long been a need in Cape Town - and now, there is one.

Taking over the old BBDO offices at 210 Long Street [almost directly over the road from the new Cape to Cuba] a new creative suite complex is making its debut.
The main idea: A creative hub focusing on the creative industries of Cape Town, to share space, inspiration, knowledge and services.

According to the owner, offices range from 10m2 (nice space for 2 desks) to 50m2 (nice for 10-12 desks) The units can be joined as your needs grow and we have space for expansion. The floor rate is R150-00 per square meter this includes the use of 230m2 of facilities.

It's a crying shame we're just about to move into the ex-Head Quarters of Adult World in Claremont, otherwise this may have been exactly what we were looking for in a new working space. [thanks Sascha]
