McDonald’s billboard in Cape Town gets bombed

We’ve been up in Joburg and missed the excitement in Long Street where the giant McDonald’s billboard, that is estimated to cost in excess of R350 000 a month for the space, has been defaced by vegans.
Cow-kissing, lettuce munchers cleverly added the word ‘…not’ below the infamous ‘I’m lovin’ it’ trademark copy. Nobody noticed…until last week, so the defacing may have happened ages ago. It’s really that scary. We haven’t stuffed our faces with a quarter of a pound of processed meat in ages and haven’t even felt the need to for a while now – so the guerrilla action must have worked then. Hopefully they’ll fix it soon.

Not sure if its vegetarians who did it? It could be the people living in the block, not impressed with the red light shining through their windows, coming into their apartments. It can be a revolt against the cheapening of the ‘iconic’ billboard at the end of Long, which used to be ads for Whiskey or cellphone Service providers. It somehow always represented Cape Town City Bowl in some way. I used to look out for it, to see what creative thinking is going on in CT. Now, its red, with an M that represents everything I fight against, a war I’m obviously not fighting alone.

Why the unnecessary vegan bashing?
What is infamous about “I’m lovin’ it”?
And where do you come with “Nobody noticed…until last week”? Everybody noticed – you were just late to the party.

Jonathan you clearly have no idea what’s going on. The so called ‘vegan’ vandal, is actually a good friend and a regular meat eater, and no the residents would obviously been investigated first so they wouldn’t do something that would get them caught so easily. The real vandal actually had a sticker printed (…not) and actually got on a ladder to put it on, and nobody noticed…

Haha! I am thinking that someone got a little too aggro after watching a re-run of Super-Size Me!

Way to stick it to “The Man”. I love the way it went unnoticed for so long. Brilliant the way they may it as subtle as they did. I’m loving it.
