Fly-vertising: What?
Posted on 29. Oct, 2009 by Cassandra in Totally Whack
Here’s a germ-a-phobe’s and an insect-rights activist’s worst nightmare; we’re calling it fly-vertising.
Fly-vertising is basically a mini-advertising banner attached by string to the back of a fly. As the fly travels through the air, lands, and ultimately bugs the hell out of everyone, people not only get a bit of a shock but they also get a short glimpse at the advertisement that the fly is trailing behind it.
We’re not sure who set all this up, or what the official name is [could have something to do with Eichborn?], but apparently these flies were released at a trade show somewhere in Germany.
Apart from the shock factor, we’re not sure how effective this whole thing would actually be [apart from a high fly density place like Australia that is].
But honestly, you’d have to be in doors for this phenomenon to truly be under control. AND you’d probably have to chase after the fly for about a half mile to actually see what the itty bitty advert actually said. Maybe a fly tape company could be of some service then?
Update: VW Polo did a similar ad with Ogilvy, Cape Town this year using ‘bees’. Check it out here. [Thanks Pamela]

The promotion was invented and handled by us, a German advertising agency called Jung von Matt/Neckar.
We developed a way to fix the banner without causing any harm to the flys. We pinned an ultra-light banner on 200 flies with natural wax. After a short time the banner dropped off the fly by itself.
The goal was to promote the exhibition stand of Eichborn (postioned as “The publisher with the fly”) on the Frankfurter Buchmesse which is the world´s biggest book fair.
The reactions were and are amazing, as you can see in the video.

Doesn’t the VW Polo TV advert use something similar to this concept.
They have a bee, or bug or something pulling the price. Saying that it is a small advert for a small price or something like that???
Wonder which idea came first?
