How literally should advertising be taken? Surely this print ad should have the 'blue-rinse brigade' up in arms that it appears to promotes irresponsible driving. The kids are clearly too nervous to fetch the ball just in case they end up as a bumper ornament thanks to a speeding maniac in a Golf R32.

    I love the concept, but feel it’s in the wrong country. Any other modern country, where drivers don’t drive like utter uncts, it would work well. This is South Africa, where basic driving skills are left desired and we count the holiday period’s success when less than 1000 people have died on the roads.

    I thought the concept is that the kids aren’t fetching the ball, so that the car stops and they can get a better look at it?

    Naaa coda – don’t get that. Why would the oke stop? He’d either drive around it [unless the handling sucks] or just drive over it.
    The R32 is not sold as a good stopper – it goes like a bat outta hell, brakes are just there to prevent you from destroying the car.

    Maybe VW could cover their arse if they came back with an ad where the Golf bunches up the road from a fat wheelspin (remember the one with the long carpet?), and the bunched up road then knocks the ball up/makes it do some fancy trick… 2010 an’ all an’ all…

    I suppose you’re right Cherry. If they were waiting for the car they’d be looking up or down the road but all their eyes are fixed on the ball.

    This looks like it’s gonna be REALLY controversial. I find it out of touch, and this in any country (all countries have problems with speeding, bad driving, and road killings – even if it is not always as severe as here in SA).

    Loved the dismissive typecast ‘blue rinse brigade’. Pure Jeremy Clarkson – right up there with ’social workers’ and ‘vegetablists’. Bleeding hearts who give a sh*t about small kids being smeared across the road … faugh!

    For such open minded, creative website, there are very literal minds lurking here.
    Lets read between the lines people…
    Every child should be taught to stay off the roads. A road is not a safe place!
    I think parents should get a copy of this ad and use it to teach their kids about road safety.
    “If there are no adults around, you don’t run into the road to fetch your ball. Even if you think there are no cars coming. Look how good these kids are. They are patiently waiting for an adult to come help”
    They should hand copies of this ad out to schools.
    This ad also makes me question my own driving. ” What if a kid jumped into the road? Would I be able to avoid an accident?”
    Well done VW for a very cleaver ad that addresses both driver and pedestrian safety.
