I know this is really old news now but some extra info for future readers of this post is that unlike the olympics scenario discussed above the official 2010 world cup host cities are allowed to combine their host city logo with the official emblem to form a composite logo and Cape Town was the first of all the host Cities to release its logo.

I've always maintained that each city should find what its good at and market it aggressively. In Cape Town we make so many assumptions. While we may be sick and tired of Table Mountain logos we cannot make the assumption that the "untapped" global market that has yet to visit Cape Town is accustomed to the Table Mountain cliche. The logo is what it is. Its a brand and its the brand Cape Town needs to market aggressively, because unlike other South African cities, CT over the last ten years has discovered what its good at and has been marketing it aggressively. Today one in every 2 foreign tourists arriving in South Africa heads to Cape Town. That said out tourism numbers are nowhere close to where they could be, and 2010 offers one opportunity in making sure CT reaches its potential.

Chicago's logo is nice but the IOC is making them get rid of it because of their new rules barring bid cities from using Olympic imagery in their logos. Their new logo should be revealed in the coming months.

We're not making fun of the Cape Town logo. We like it actually. Simple - to the point - usable on many different applications. Nice. Sure it's not as sexy as the Chicago logo (which clearly seems to have it's own problems), but it works.

Go ahead, poke fun at our logo, but the Chicago logo missed the first lesson in Design101. "Stick to the client's brief".
As candidate host cities they are are not allowed to use any Olympic imagery which includes the torch.
"The edict was included in IOC rules published Wednesday to govern the 2016 selection process. It states that candidate city logos “shall not contain the Olympic symbol, the Olympic motto, the Olympic flag, any other Olympic-related imagery [such as] flame, torch, medal, etc.”
Go figure!
