The day before…

Copy: Monday 10 September 2001 – The world can change in a day. Don’t miss your daily edition of in-depth news.
It’s not often that a print ad literally jumps up and throttles our attention like this one – done for local newspaper brand Cape Times – did this morning.
There are four executions. This one in reference to 9/11, another (beautifully shot) for Hiroshima 1945, the JFK assassination and the ‘76 Soweto riots [all after the jump].
Using iconic events from history, the campaign highlights the fact that world-changing events often can¹t be predicted and that the course of history can, quite literally, change in a day.
Love the art direction and the hard-hitting message of these ads. Stunningly arresting.
Makes you think what the Virginia Tech campus looked like on Sunday morning.

Brian is an old mate from Tech days, one of the most talented guys working in SA today and also one of the most humble. Well done to him on this outstanding work, and nice one Jon for highlighting one of SA’s hidden talents.

I think it is particularly poignant that all four ads feature children…

23. Apr, 2007
@Akhilesh – probably not. The picture Kennedy and his kids looks like something published in Life magazine well before he was assassinated (besides, I think he was already in Texas on Nov 21).
Anyway — powerful images but they all turn on death and tragedy. I find an element to these adverts to exploitative and creepy.

The Day Before
All too commonly we see photos of the day after major world-changing events.
An advertising campaign for the South African newspaper The Cape Times focuses instead on amazing photos taken the day BEFORE iconic events from our history. Some highlights:…

While I appreciate the notion of living every day to the fullest, and the powerful photography displayed here, I can’t help feeling angry that these tragedies are being used as a marketing gimick to sell the Cape Times.

Great idea.
I’m curious if these photos were taken the day before the events. Possibly they were but its quite possible they are just random photos. Its a lot more powerful if they’re actually from the posted date.
Just a thought.

These pictures have to be the most morbid advertising message ever conveyed. “Buy your paper every day or you will miss the catastrophes inflicted on these children.”

03. May, 2007
Those pictures really put things into perspective. They really make you tihnk about how the people in Hiroshima really had no clue, and were just living that day as any other and the same with the others. It is definatly chilling to look at these, but still, very impowering. Thanks for posting!

Its amzaing how many people do forget these precious times, yet when they look back they are stunned by the beauty that these photos shows. Pity we cannot turn back time to save these things that has happened in life, but we can certainly learn from them

Nice try on the photos, but they’re not the right date or doctored. Kennedy was at Brooks AFB San Antonio Texas on November 21st, not in Washington. There was no softball field close to the Twin Towers, that location actually was the Citibank building.

The caption that goes with that Kennedy shot is as follows:
by Cecil Stoughton. Kennedy children visit the Oval Office. President Kennedy, Caroline Kennedy, John F. Kennedy, Jr. White House, Oval Office, 1962.
Very good imagery. And just more lies in advertising.

Cool idea, but it is a little morbid for the advertising genre. The second image is incorrectly dated and it is unlikely that the photographer in the third image got his photos out of town by the next day. The first image could be checked by weather and a soccer schedule; the fourth image by weather and terrain…

These are wonderful.
I like how they made the dates seem like just another day (as they would have been) by putting the day of the week in.
Great pictures.

I like the message that they are trying to convey, but I agree with the other posters that these are obviously not real photos from the days they are claiming. it is powerful, certainly, but then again, so is a lot of propoganda.
