Cool product idea: Disposable audio book

With iTunes refusing to recognise South Africa as a viable place to do business – we’re loving this PlayAway idea.
Its basically a pre-loaded digital audio book which is the size of an iPod mini and consists of player, earphones and lanyard.
The "books" come preloaded with one of a few books, like "Anansi Boys,"
John Grisham’s "The Broker," Stephen King’s "Cell" and "The Da Vinci
Code".
It costs $34.95 (R250) per player / book , and is powered by an AAA battery.
The idea is that once you’ve listened to the thing, you can pass it on or chuck it.
Great idea. And why should it stop at books?
iPods and other MP3 players are expensive in Africa. If you could have the devise made cheaply in China, it could be loaded with music compilations or even educational content.

It’s not a bad idea, but as long as it costs the same as hardback, I think I’d rather wait for the trade paperback.

Chuck it? I hope not… I’ve become too landfill conscious to buy something like this…

If you are looking for audiobooks, you can buy them pretty freely from Audible (http://www.audible.com). You can buy legal music from emusic (http://www.emusic.com) and Magnatunes (http://magnatune.com/). Granted the music is not the latest music but you can buy it legally and there is no DRM.
If you use Windows Media Player you can buy music from Pick ‘n Play and Musica (being an iPod user myself, I suggest these latter sources reluctantly and solely to promote legal music trade).
