Coke teams up with Grand Theft Auto

Now that the ad as gone around the world a couple of times on YouTube – its time for us to chime in with our completely biased opinion from the bottom end of Africa.

Coca Cola’s latest chart smashing advertising hit has been made to resemble the ultra-violent kids-favourite Rockstar video game – Grand Theft Auto.
Instead of the game’s main character romping around killing, raping and hijacking, our hero downs a ice cold Coke and proceeds to love and care for everyone instead like he’s an e-junkie at a trance party.

Now, Coke have been very clever here. The ad is fresh, viral, innovative, engages the target market and is a mild form of protest advertising. Is the world’s biggest brand trying to say to the American public that love, sharing and kindness works better than bombing the crap out of others?

We got the version of that woman walking around Cape Town giving away bottles of Coke to everyone, which was alot less memorable than the GTA version.

The GTA Coke ad can be put up there with the best ones the brand has ever made. More…more.

Following the BMW ad campaign here on Cherryflava – the team from BMW invited us to an ‘Innovation Day’ and the unveiling of the new Z4 Coupe here is South Africa.

After flying through to Paarl in a 130i and back in a X3, they pulled back the hiding cloth and revealed this beast.
We were hoping that we’d be invited to take the puppy for a year and splash Cherryflava branding on it to see how it holds up on the streets of Cape Town, but instead they allowed us to leave with these shots to encourage the saving for our own.

Local music blog The Muso has put together a wicked collaboration of musical tastes from a collection of South Africa’s bloggers.

Dubbed – ‘Whatever blows your hair on your back’, its the first in hopefully a series of group posts by the SA blog community.
We’re in there with our choice of Cape Town’s own indie-punk, kick-some-ass band; The Wild Eyes.

While you’re at it – go have a look at a great business concept aimed at promoting independant artists called; Sellaband.

Its a web platform that enables fans to sponsor bands, and get a piece the
action in return. How it works: fans, dubbed Believers, find an artist
they like on SellaBand.com. For USD 10, they can buy a share, or
‘Part’. Once the band has sold 5,000 parts, SellaBand arranges a

This picture is fascinating in so many ways.

Note the rather numerous food outlets available just on one street corner. The random, relaxed manner in which the pedestrians are casually crossing the street, the guy sitting in the window on the second floor staring at everyone….and this rather nasty billboard (right above a deli) in the middle of it all. Here’s another elsewhere.

Apparently this thing is for Cartoon Network, and another good example of how the evil of heavy metal has spread into other entertainment genres aimed at kids.

Time media has released their 50 coolest websites for 2006.

Many of this year’s choices are shining examples of Web 2.0:

YouTube and MySpace crack the nod as well as Zunafish – the swap site which we wrote about a while back.

The more we investigate various furnishing and design options for our mega-lair – the more we realise that paint on walls is so…not now.

At $1000 per sheet, this Helvetica wallpanel covering is the business, if you’re running a maths thinktank or you’re a numerologist.
We’re not impressed. There are no 0′s in the pattern. It was a sure sale until we saw the lack of 0′s. [via]
