Levi’s Jeans
Posted on 21. Jul, 2006 by Jonathan Cherry.
Of all the shows we attended at this year’s Cape Town fashion week – we enjoyed this one the most.
Bed on bricks got things going and the street-style from the four different designers was uber edgy.
Massive amounts of detailing, prints and layers were what differentiated and made it. Props to Levi’s for reinventing their brand yet again – at least here in South Africa.
UPLOAD 09 Creative Collisions
Posted on 20. Jul, 2006 by Cassandra.
Here’s something happening in Cape Town that could be interesting if you’re into creative expression and mashing together of ideas.
In amongst this rather complex graphic design flyer you can just figure out that its not an invite to a trance party, but infact something called UPLOAD NINE: Creative collisions.
From their site:
UPLOAD is about providing an informal space for learning about the many
forms of creative expression. It’s a chance for diverse individuals to
get together, share a thought and stare knowingly at imagery with a
beat.
Sounds very Cape Town and there’s no official word on free mind-enhancing aids that will be handed out, but what caught us is that they’ve snagged a speaker by the name of Chris Csikszentmihályi who’s from MIT’s Media Lab Computing Culture Group in Cambridge, USA. [its a mouthful]
If you’re keen and clever enough to understand the invite – its free and the rest of the details are here.
Design your own bank card
Posted on 20. Jul, 2006 by Cassandra.
Bank brands and financial service brands are damn hard to differentiate. Unless you’ve employed killer staff that all have a huge stake in the business – a bank is a bank right?
Maybe not.
The KBC bank in Belgium, now offers its customers the opportunity to personalize their own bank cards.
Via the KBC website, customers are invited to submit an image of their choice. After a few days they can pick up a new card at the bank that
has the selected image imprinted (if it is approved of by KBC that is).
Nice one.

Charity vending machine
Posted on 20. Jul, 2006 by Cassandra.
We’re sure you’ve noticed the small congregation of charity money boxes at the entrance of your local Pick ‘n Pay.
You know…that giant penguin, the paint-chipped cripple girl and the gray dog that seem to have become part of our national retail furniture.
In Japan, they’ve taken the idea that much further and are pioneering the use of charity vending machines, which allows users to donate their change to such good causes as
environmental conservation and child welfare at the push of a button.
These machines have been well received by consumers, who enjoy being
able to contribute to a cause that interests them when they buy a
canned or bottled drink.
The prices of the cold drinks are the usual, but a portion goes to the charity can that you choose.
Cool CSI project for a drinks giant like Coke to play around with.
Expect cans sporting a giant penguin and a scruffy dog.

Electric avenue

If the previous ZOOP car was a bit limp-wristed for your manly tastes – then perhaps the recently unveiled Tesla Electric car is more up your street.
The Tesla Roadster, an electric-powered road rocket, that can travel from
0-60 in four seconds with a top speed of 130mph. Singing the body
electric is a 182-kilowatt AC-induction motor, a rear-mounted power
plant drawing its energy from 6800 lithium ion batteries. Even though
that engine’s barely audible, it’s capable of rotating at an
astonishing 13,500rpm before it even gets close to the redline.
Its not just these guys that are leapfrogging the whole hybrid thing and going fully electric. DaimlerChrysler has turned its popular teeny Smart car into an EV. The
electric version of the Smartfortwo will be available for lease to 100
customers in Great Britain in November.
