Is advertising dead?

Lately…the constant low-frequency hum of advertising wallpaper that we’re faced with daily, has just got a whole herd worse than usual.
With JK Rowling apparently earning more than a million pounds and hour since the launch of her latest Harry Potter book….without advertising….is it now time to admit, that advertising as we know it, is dead?
So what now…no more coked up creatives, media parties…small country GDP billed equivalent production budgets?
World famous trend mapping newsletter Trendspotting’s July issue tracks the solution here.
Basically, as we move forward, the only real thing compelling us to try or buy a new product or service is the Twinsumer trend…..consumers looking for the best of the best, the first of the first, the
most relevant of the relevant increasingly don’t connect to ‘just any other
consumer’ anymore, they are hooking up with (and listening to) their taste
‘twins’; fellow consumers somewhere in the world who think, react, enjoy and
consume the way they do.
Already this trend has sparked opinion sites like Epinions.com and Findory.com. As well as blog sites like Gridskipper and Cool Hunting (who we link to).
Check out the Trendwatching article here and link through to the examples….and then carry on ignoring the mindless, lying, overpriced ads that try slap you in the face everyday of your life.
Put it this way…if you need to advertise your product…it’s probably not good enough to sell itself without it.
