Elon Musk is a pretty clever guy, so if he’s calling for a universal basic income then it’s got to be a thing, right?
In a recent CNBC interview Musk said: “I think that there’s a pretty good chance we end up with a universal basic income, or something like that, due to automation. I’m not sure what else one would do.”
But is giving everyone a basic income, because all the work is being done by robots, the right solution in a future where work is a commodity? We’re not so sure.
We’re not so sure.
Under these extreme future ‘artificial intelligence’ conditions – the premise on which the system of capitalism is built no longer exists. So why then would something like money or income even be a element in a future system? Money itself will be irrelevant. So the need for a basic income will not exist.
Should the scenario, that Musk describes, play out – the world will need to rethink the entire economic system from scratch.
With the production of work no longer being a reason for human existence, perhaps we can all just do whatever it is we really want to do rather than worrying so much about trying to earn a living from what the world will pay us to do.
