seed vaultThe global seed vault can be found deep inside a mountain on a remote island in the Svalbard archipelago, halfway between mainland Norway and the North Pole.

The seed vault is the world’s doomsday insurance policy, holding the world’s largest collection of crop seeds just in case something unimaginable should happen in the future that would spark the need to tap into this resource.

This may sounds like the main plot of a dystopian novel by HG Wells, but the same as with backing up the files on your computer – the idea of backing up the Earth’s entire plant gene code is just good practice.

As the saying goes – ‘better safe than hungry’.
