We spotted an interesting looking Green Bottle milk container in Woolworths the other day and wondered what it was all about.
The Woolworths Green Bottle is a sustainable alternative to conventional milk packaging because it is 30% plant based.
Produced from sugar cane (which is what sugar cane really should be used for), the material of the Woolworths Green Bottle is sourced from Brazil’s largest sugar cane producer. Sugar cane is obviously a much better material than the remnants of ancient fossils (oil) to made stuff from – and most probably degrades over time a lot better too.
So what are the benefits of using ‘Bioplastic’ made from sugar cane?
- Renewable. Sugarcane polyethylene replaces 30 percent or more of the petroleum that would otherwise be used to manufacture the plastic.
- Lower carbon footprint. Each metric ton of bio – polyethylene produced avoids the emission of 2 to 2.5 metric tons of carbon dioxide on a lifecycle basis.
Woolworths South Africa joins other companies like Coca-Cola and Johnson & Johnson in the use of Bioplastic for a selection of their products.
It’s good to see big food retailers starting to explore ways of offering more sustainable packaging options as part of their range. It is obviously a long and protracted process, but at least the mindset willing to view the opportunity systemically is there.
