Yesterday two beautifully hand-crafted bicycles – seemingly belonging to the statues of Jan and Maria – appeared on the streets of Cape Town. Each had been completely covered in bright orange crochet and left for passers by to enjoy.
When we went down there to take some photographs, a huge group of foreign tourists were just busy finishing off touching and taking pics of the bikes themselves with much excitement.
The bikes are the work of Cape Town artist Isabeau Joubert – who over the years has done a number of yarnbombings in the city, this one however is pushing more into a public art genre.
Cities are places for people. The CBD can be dull and just a place of work – or thanks to the contribution of ordinary Capetonians and their creativity, they can be places of joy and discovery. It was amazing to see just what two bicycles covered in wool could do for somebody’s day.
