TRON Legacy projection mapping in London
Posted on 02. Dec, 2010 by Jonathan Cherry.
Apart from snowflakes threatening to destroy the projector – TRON was made for projection mapping.
It was created using 6 x 18k projectors onto a projection canvass of approx 50m wide by 20m tall. Audio from an 8k D&B sound rig playing soundtrack courtesy of daft Punk and the original sound FX from the film.
Plug in, crank it up.
Saks Fifth Avenue also goes the projection mapping route for Christmas
Posted on 24. Nov, 2010 by Jonathan Cherry.
Ah – the simulations of reality are becoming better and more widespread. Saks Fifth Avenue is like Cavendish, but with limos and people that look like they belong on the Home Alone movie set. And here they too are making use of cutting edge 3D projection mapping to lure would-be consumers into parting with their hard won debt.
For us – this one lacks a bit of colour, but you get the picture. Also – we wonder how sound is added to the mix here. It comes across a bit like an old silent movie. But that’ll all surely be addressed as this technology develops.
Ralph Lauren reinvents the fashion show with 4D spectacular
Posted on 11. Nov, 2010 by Jonathan Cherry.
The making of this 10- minute fashion show must have cost the same amount of money that was spent to make Avatar, but the result is simply spectacular.
“It’s game changing — it blows my mind — it changes the way we look at architecture; it will change retail, movies, advertising, everything,” says David Lauren, son of the brand’s founder, of the spectacle and the new technology that makes it possible.
On Wednesday, Ralph Lauren plans to offer the public a futuristic vision in which “architectural mapping” technology is used on the store facade, creating what the brand calls a “4-D” experience.
The effects are to include a vision of the company’s signature polo players, a giant horse-head belt wrapping the building and a lineup of vast neckties — a reference to the product on which Ralph Lauren was founded four decades ago.
This latest dramatic development is part of what the company calls “merchan-tainment,” the concept of commerce with entertainment, which it previously has offered through lifestyle films on RLTV, its own production operation, as well as initiatives with sports.
But the new “augmented reality” project is in another league.
“We put our hearts and souls into this,” says Mr. Lauren of the sound and light show created by superimposing optical effects created by pinpointed pixels of light over a projected 3-D replica of the building.
This sensory experience — complete with sound and even a mist of fragrance — will not be staged only in London. One of the brand’s New York stores also will get a similar eye-popping show. [more via NYTimes]
…and here is the official video of the show itself.
Product projection mapping from New Balance
Posted on 10. Nov, 2010 by Jonathan Cherry.
Projection mapping isn’t difficult to do, but the resulting experience it creates is startling. In today’s example, New Balance do some projection mapping on one of their smelly ol’ takkies – turning it into something Tron may have considered running the Comrades marathon in.
Simple and easy, yet effective. That’s what we like.

And now for…indoor projection mapping
Posted on 25. Oct, 2010 by Jonathan Cherry.
By the looks of it – pretty soon it’s going to be near impossible to tell the difference between what is, and what isn’t some form of created projected image.
All they have to get right now is being able to do the same in broad daylight. But that is just a matter of time.
Projection Mapping in Prague

As far as experiential eventing goes, projection mapping is the new Lady Gaga. It’s a complex process to put together, but the result is well worth it.
This is some mapping done for the 600 year anniversary of the astrological tower clock situated at Old Town Square in center of Prague.

Real-life physics

As far as experiential concepts go, we’re always on the search for astounding ideas that make you question reality.
“This physics engine, called Lagoa Multiphysics 1.0, was created by Thiago Costa and essentially simulates real-life physics in a completely realistic way. This demo shows a piece of charcoal breaking and spreading as it hits the ground. ” [via]
Just imagine this stuff with a sprinkling of projection mapping on an icy night in the middle of the city. Anyhow it’s technical.
As you were.
Sony 3D building projection mapping
Posted on 25. Jun, 2010 by Jonathan Cherry.
It was Samsung earlier in the week, but here’s what Sony did in Madrid as part of their involvement in the Champions League final.
We’re surprised Sony didn’t do something similar for the World Cup, but perhaps we’re jumping the gun here a bit. Would love an invite to it if it is scheduled [hint hint].
ACDC vs. Iron Man 2 – Architectural projection madness

Turn the volume knob to LOUD, pre-load the video, grab a cuppa hot, steaming black brew and just absorb.
