Gap goes back
Posted on 12. Oct, 2010 by Jonathan Cherry.
Folding to public pressure – Gap had decided to ditch it’s attempt to rebrand and huddle back in the warm, safe, secure hands of its old logo again. Clearly the public ridicule and private Facebook jokes regarding its new logo were too much for the company [who obviously weren't sold on their new logo themselves either].
Maybe Cell C will grab a hint from Gap and realise that comedy isn’t perhaps the best marketing hook for a business that just can’t help turning itself into a joke.
Are poorly made redesign decisions an effective form of advertising?

Nobody really cared too much about Gap – until they decided to redesign their logo. Now everybody has a good reason to completely hate them and spend good time listing why their new choice of typeface belongs in a classroom rather than above America’s favourite plain clothes retailer.
Maybe it’s a good advertising strategy for brands that have nothing better to offer than a bit of design controversy.
In our minds the time could have been better spent actually creating a better in-store experience than worrying about the logo. But excess funds must be spent – even in times of recession.

Retailers extending the experience to the iPad
Posted on 12. Apr, 2010 by Jonathan Cherry.
The iPad had only just launched, but it seems already if you’re not doing something wild ‘app-wise’ on the platform, you’re a little 2009.
AKQA just released the new Gap iPad app, 1969 Stream, featuring exclusive content from Gap designers, fashion mavens and entertainment talents, including a music video from Truth & Salvage Co for “Them Jeans,” and video starring Project Runway designer Jay Sario, who fits customers in Gap denim at the brand’s 1969 Jeans Shop in West Hollywood.
The content is completely integrated with mobile shopping, with all items tagged for instant purchase or sharing with friends. Users can also find the nearest Gap store with the app’s geo-locater.
The number of branded apps on iTunes is increasing daily. For now it’s a mad rush to join the me-too crowd. But we suggest, If you don’t have anything remarkably useful or entertaining to share – don’t do it.

To promote their “Sprize – shopping turned on its head” campaign – the GAP store in Vancouver literally turned everything in and outside of their store on its head.
