QR Codes are turning busy city streets into giant art galleries

Streetdealer

We've never been big fans of art galleries. They're too quiet, the people who work in them seem a bit uptight and the atmosphere is a bit like a state library - not great.
But thanks to QR code technology the streets can now magically transform into art galleries.

A multimedia art group C6 and Bristol-based art co-operative  Steal From Work have found an innovative way to make street-based works commercially available.  The Street Art Dealer project links artworks to websites using QR codes.  When viewing an outdoor piece art enthusiasts need only scan the accompanying QR Code to gain detailed artwork information straight from their cell phone. Hiding great art in a gallery is a crying shame. Hopefully this system is rolled out further than just Bristol and a city like Cape Town proudly shows off its artists to the world.

Car election billboards pick up speed...well, some of them

16042009693

One of the features of the election this year is the new trend of 'vehicle branding' that seems to be really popular with the ANC and DA. It's not uncommon to see JZee's face on the side of CLS with darkened windows or Helen Zille completely dominating an entire bus, but this particular vehicle seemed to be held together with papier-mâché.

Perhaps his voters can throw a few coins into a kitty to pimp out this old, dodgy bus. Something befitting a man of his stature. [thanks to The Skim for the pic]

Evidence of a time travel machine found in Mouille Point

30032009128

This pic was shot yesterday. A series of Rugby World Cup 1995 lamp post banners was indeed to be seen on street poles in Mouille Point, Cape Town yesterday.

Set dressing for the World Cup movie starring Matt Damon that's being shot in the city at the moment - or quantum physics experiments proved

The Sleepers: Something about this poster made us want to touch it

Yesterday we started our preparation for the brand new street game we're producing for next week's UCT Nomadic Marketing course.
Our presentation, which delegates discover for themselves on the streets on Cape Town, is a bit like a theatre production on the street so it takes a bit of time to map out and prepare. Just the initial recce work requires many hours of scouting and getting to intimately know Cape Town's darker, skanky alleys and shady characters.

Spotted this poster on the corner of Loop and Strand last night. The lack of information on it and the nature of it's design was too irresistible not to warrant further investigation.

Turns out it's for an album launch of a Cape Town band called The Sleepers.

Mmmmmm...Yumchum Ass going for just R9.99

Yumchum

Damn - we gotta get down to the nearest PnP and pick up a packa Yumchum Ass. Whatever it is, it's going for just R9.99 for 6. That means one Yumchum Ass for everyday of the week and a bit of a breather on Sundays.

[thanks to Justin for letting us know and spotting this fine Ass promotion]

Talk to somebody - use no words

Based loosely on the concept illustrated in this awesome old Cell C ad, we're hosting a very different kind of new media presentation this afternoon for a lucky group of foreign participants in the streets of Claremont.

Our bank of Nokia N95s are certainly going to be put through their paces. The ad itself is one of the best Cell C have ever made, but perhaps a little before its time.

James Bond is proudly South African

Danielcraig100908

What 007 has done for Aston Martin, he could subtly be doing for brand South Africa.

The paparrazzi have snapped Daniel Craig [broken arm and all] walking around with a rather familiar flag attached to his DB9 ignition key.

Once again, the team tasked to promote brand South Africa have pulled a MASSIVE rabbit outta the hat with this one [look carefully at the keyring he's holding in this pic]
Now you've got the entire tabloid reading United States population wondering and speculating if  the keyring is a symbol of his sexual orientation or the logo of the new hybrid he's driving.

Genius.

Spotted: PnP turns to Bibvertising

Usually seen on inner city street corners to promote 'Cash for Gold' pawn shops, South Africa's supermarket giant is running an ambient street corner 'bibvertising' initiative to alert passing motorists, that after nearly two years of absence, their new Claremont store will soon be open for business.

Bibbie

Clearly the budget for effective marketing of the new store was used up to purchase the new trolleys.
How very disappointing and a great creative marketing opportunity lost.
After spending R40 billion [...or whatever it cost...] on the new store you would think it reason enough to invest just a bit more on blowing your own trumpet in celebration.

Plans to turn Joburg airport into a disco

27032008210

Perhaps it's because OR Tambo International airport in Joburg is finding the task of functioning as an airport such a challenging one - it seems there may well be plans to transform it into a very large disco.
Yesterday. this large mirror ball must have just arrived at the domestic arrivals area and is now ready for its erection.
Or maybe this thing was left in the passenger 'lost and found' and they're just not to sure what to do with it now and are still hoping somebody will come and collect it.

Maybe it may have something to do with those rather strange teaser ads, featuring some guy washing a giant disco ball in a car wash? We did some of our own scratching around on the net and may have uncovered the pending ad campaign that this thing is for....
