So, now that BMW's Z4 is in the mix on Cherryflava - we thought we'd burrow a little deeper into the Z4 by Joshua Davis campaign to get the lowdown on what the car and the unique artworks are all about.
Firstly, the design of the new Z4 would have been impossible a couple of years ago, due to the massive computing power needed to fire up the necessary algorithms used in the process.
Did you know that many of the drawing tools in Illustrator and Photoshop owe their existence to the automotive industry?
While obviously being closely related to the BMW Z4 M Roadster,
this fixed-roof two-seater goes its own way also in its design and styling. The low and sleek curvature of the roof
typical of a coupé and the striking look of the car from the side make this new model unmistakable at first
sight.
Joshua Davis is the Flash animation wizard that design the innovative site Praystation and was commissioned by BMW to reinterpret the car’s innovative design for a series of limited-run digital illustrations.
He began by creating a motion algorithm with a series of parameters
that defined a path, which he then stroked with a shape. By using this
algorithmic approach, Davis created a subtly different image each time.
The result is a set of unique abstract images that, while not being
representative of the car itself, capture some of the concepts that
informed its design.
