The Cherryflava Peep Show presents: Lessons sport can teach business

On Tuesday 5 June at 18h15 we’ve invited Dr Ross Tucker [from The Sports Science Institute} to present his insights into 'Lessons sport can teach business' at Dear Me [165 Longmarket Street, Cape Town].

There are a lot of similarities in the way world-class athletes train their minds to deal with pressure, and get that winning-edge, to the way the world’s leading entrepreneurs and business people think and succeed. Dr Ross Tucker has done extensive research into this field and we are very excited to host him and offer you the opportunity to get some exposure to his findings.

It promises to be a fascinating presentation by one of the countries leading sports scientists. The whole affair shouldn’t last more than an hour or so and afterwards you’re more than welcome to join us for a drink at the bar upstairs.

Food companies are as bad as tobacco companies

Food – it seems- has become the cause of a global epidemic that we all seem to be casually ignoring. The marketing of junk to kids, the rewarding of junk as a treat and or ignorance as to how this crap affects us is alarming. But the debates surrounding the issues are complex. We don’t have enough of an understanding of them to offer an educated alternative in this forum, but what we do feel however is that money and greed seems to be put before people in countries around the world struggling with this ‘problem’.

The blame seems to be squarely put at the door of the individual [as is the case in this HBO documentary called 'The weight of a nation'], but what connection is being made with the lies that food marketers are selling people. Sugar-laden breakfast cereals supposedly sold as ‘low-fat’, corn starch-rich rubbish marketed as a ‘healthy’ alternative, should be outlawed.

Products packed for ‘convenience’ are killing people without them even realising that these are the things causing their illness. People are ignorant, but ‘trusted’ brands are not exactly helping matters. Do yourself a favour – next time you’re in the supermarket queue, look around at what people have in their baskets. It’s a bad habit of ours, but one we have difficulty resisting.

Our personal observation – if it comes in a package with bright colours, cartoon characters or ‘loud’ typefaces – it’s most likely crap.

Keep in mind however – that a lot of people are making a lot of money ‘solving’ the obesity trend at the same time. If you talk it up enough – you’ll convince a generation that they need to do something about it to solve the problem.

If you still have fond memories of being at the very first Springbok Nude Girls show that was in a back room of the Art Centre at Stellenbosch University sometime when Black Label was still cool and the Dros wasn’t a family steak house – then you are unique and inherently awesome.

After watching RAMFEST Nation, a 3-part mini documentary produced by South African music website, Boom.fm – we may have to make our way to RAMFEST sometime soon to experience what’s going down now in the SA music underworld.

Looking back: The Cherryflava Show from 2007

We’ve been doing a lot of evaluation of the work and stuff that we’ve done in the past – and recently stumbled over this. It’s the pilot episode of what we called The Cherryflava Show. It was completely unscripted and frankly a little raw, but it’s had nearly 4000 views and watching it again, well… it was pretty fun to shoot.

We never made another one, but 5 years on – who knows.

We went on quiet a bit about projection mapping last year and the project that we produced for Dimension Data’s internal sales conference last year. So we thought we’d start the year off sharing some footage from that mapping that we did with you.

Here’s the animation clip that we done by the highly talented folk from Motif Studios…

Of course being there and experiencing it on the 14m wide x 5m high custom stage and with rock stadium quality sound is first prize, but hopefully this gives you a good idea of how a conference should be started.

Alternate reality conferencing

As well as being the year of The Protester [Time magazine's person of the year] , for us 2011 has been the year of pushing ourselves into uncomfortable new spaces.  We started this year with a mission – to take everything that we’d learnt from producing alternate reality games for our clients over the years, and packaging the unseen, fantasy mechanic for retail and event applications. In essence we’ve transformed ourselves from a marketing company, into a technology company.

This year we’ve focused on just a few key areas of specialisation. We’ve done a significant amount of work in the realm of 3D projection mapping, which on a global scale has seen a significant amount of growth as a brand presentation mechanism. We’ve concentrated our efforts on the production of 3D mapping, which culminated in the production of the Dimension Data’s Annual Sales Conference mapping on a custom built 14 x 5 meter set. We worked with the world-class team from Motif Studios to create a mixture of visual and audio delight that really blew the audience [and client] away. Having seen many of the mapping examples from around the world – we’re pretty confident that ours was right up there with the best of them, which is where we feel the most comfortable.

The other area of specialisation that we really got some good traction with this year is RFID. It stands for Radio Frequency Identification and as a technology we’ve been exploring its uses as a means to trigger our branded experiences and integrate those real-world experiences with social media platforms like Facebook. In a very short space of time we’ve developed, prototyped and built some pretty powerful machines that talk directly to actionable applications like Facebook. The result was that we turned the recent Axe Cloud 9 Party into an interactive media space that added to the experience of being at the event and gave the Axe brand some very cool brand exposure on Facebook.

So this year has been a great one in the sense that, once again – we’ve prepared ourselves well for 2012 and our mission to help brands create fantasy experiences for their clients and stakeholders.

A huge thanks has to go to all of our business partners and clients for making 2011 the success that it was. As is tradition here at Cherryflava – at the end of every year we give ourselves a public grading for how we feel we have performed throughout the year and this time around we will give ourselves a B+ for 2011. We are exploring in a unique, niched arena not only in South Africa but globally, but with our unique background and mixture of talents we’re well set up now to deliver even more in 2012.
