Like the marshmallow man in Ghostbusters

Made with 2500 standard Coke bottle crates – this huge ‘fan man’ is pretty damn impressive. It’s located in Newtown Joburg at the fan park over there. Hopefully Cape Town cracks the nod to get one as well.

The ‘man’ weighs 25 tonnes and stands 16.5 meter tall.

Cratefan is a recycling initiative, created using a skeleton of scaffolding clad with around 2500 1.25l Coca-Cola crates.
All the materials will be reused/recycled once he has finished celebrating.

Sepp Blatter?

Sepp Blatter?

There is no truth in the rumour that has been going around that this is in fact Sepp Blatter’s car that has been spotted on the highways of Johannesburg. So if it’s not Sepp – who could it be? Danny Jordaan?

Joburg goes completely mental with flags as part of World Cup build up

Jeez louise!

Jeez louise!

If it’s not cars that are completely covered with flags, it’s the streets of Johannesburg themselves that are literally littered with World Cup flag love just a week before the games start.

Joburg may have tonnes of flags, but we here in Cape Town prefer to paste the national flag on our naked bodies and run down the city streets showing our support. Beat that Jozie!!! [BTW - that video is NSFW if you work in Joburg. Down here in Cape Town it happens all the time - so nobody really bats and eyelid]

With just a week to go to the start of the FIFA 2010 World Cup tournament – it would be kinda rude of us if we didn’t post this video dedicated to the awesome Cape Town stadium.

Can’t wait!

They look a bit like illustrations from a children’s bible, but as a set – framed and mounted as posters in a huge loft apartment, we can totally see ourselves wanting to steal them. Done by Cape Town agency Am I Collective for American agency, Weiden & Kennedy and their client ESPN,  they make anything related to the London 2012 Olympics look positively silly. Actually anything related to the London 2012 Olympics manages to come across as rather odd and delusional all by themselves.

29977_402282872040_161531382040_4615466_5409863_n

The Wieden team instructed the illustrators to create the murals in the style of 1980s Ghanaian movie posters. It took nine people three solid months to create the finals. The campaign comprises print, outdoor (including hand-painted versions), digital and an art book. The work celebrates each country’s culture and soccer history. [more via Adfreak]

Look – what we know about art is dangerous, but our favourite? Cameroon – we’d steal that one first and then the rest…

The Puma Gear Box

The Puma Gear Box

Ignoring the the current state of intercity bus travel in our country, Puma have converted an old Luxliner bus into a moving gear store and will be travelling around the country during the month long World Cup allowing fans to touch then on their…bus.

Yo DJ spin that sh*t!

Yo DJ spin that sh*t!

5fm’s DJ Fresh and Euphonik will get the party started by doing a live broadcast from Barba‘s in Bloemfontein on 2 June where the bus will make its first stop.

PUMA’s Gear Box, converted by Designamite, is fully equipped as a mobile store so that fans across the country will be able to shop onboard.  The interior of the former Mercedes Lux Liner owes its customer-friendly design to ‘The Passion’ bass guitarist from the Dirty Skirts.

Besides taking in smaller country towns, the Gear Box will also make appearances at PUMA Party Safaris that are planned for Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth, Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban.

Key arrival dates for the PUMA Gear Box:

2 June – Bloemfontein (Barba’s)
4 June – Johannesburg (Party Safari at The Woods Live)
11 June – Port Elizabeth (Party Safari at Balizza)
18 June – Pretoria (Party Safari at Ekaya)
25 June – Cape Town (Party Safari at The Temple)
2 July – Durban (Party Safari at Zulu Jazz Lounge)
8 – 11 July – Johannesburg

Bus looks cool, just hope the clothing won’t be all beer-stained and smell like cigarettes by the time they hit Joburg, but we’re sure it won’t.

A local ad agency, Net#work BBDO, just so have to be geographically located on the infamous Cape Town Stadium ‘fan mile’ [the walk from the centre of the city to the stadium] and not being ones to miss an opportunity – have decorated their building accordingly.

On the subject of World Cup + Advertising – the BBC have and interesting recipe for how you too can make a cracking World Cup advert. Can’t believe the Carlsberg World Cup advert cost them £750,000. Eish! They should have made it here – would have been much more reasonable.

MTN starts to wind up the 2010 party

We gave the guys over at MetropolitanRepublic a call after being rather impressed with the New MTN ‘Ayoba’ 2010 TV ad that’s doing the rounds at the moment. As we lead up to the World Cup – there may be a few variations on a theme that you’ll spot of these that are more city specific.

For example – here’s Durban’s edition:

If you’re wondering what Ayoba means:

It’s an evolution of expressions like ‘ayeye’ / ‘ayoyoyo’ and was first used to express approval/appreciation of good dancing.
As with most slang words, no one knows its exact origins, but it’s presumed to have started in Joburg township culture.  It means delight, excitement, agreement, approval or can be used as a greeting/goodbye.
It is uniquely South African.

Now you know some South African. Use it!

Hyundai mount a giant vuvuzela on Cape Town highway

We have highways in Cape Town that after an extended lunch break during their construction we got bored of and decided to stop building cause we had better thing to do.

Now Hyundai have seen an opportunity to erect a massive vuvusela [that's a very loud plastic trumpet that within a few days the entire world will be well aware of] on one of those highways leading to the Cape Town Stadium.

We heard a story on the radio that they’re going to connect a couple of truck horns to it so that it can also make a lekker noise too [as if we needed to make any more of a racket]. We’re practicing our own horn blowing technique for that France – Paraguay Uruguay game in just 15 days time.

The Hyunadai Laduuuuuuuuma

Forget about window flags and mirror covers, Hyundai have created the ultimate World Cup fan car.

Hyundai’s has commissioned two very special i10s to be built. Both the i10s are covered in artificial turf and the center circle on the roof is a home to a 1.5 meter tall foot ball. On the other, the both vehicle features goal post on the bonnet of the car that driver peers through. Additionally, the other exterior features include the soccer ball wheels and the football shoe mirrors. Coming to the interior, it features grass look that matches the exterior and right down to the soccer-ball headrests. [more here]

Expect the taxis here to start looking similar pretty soon too.
