I think it’s brilliant. Especially the music.
It’s art. And art makes you think.
If you peel back all the Ninja and Yolandi “Fok jou’s” and general Die Antwoord dribble ( my blaaar ) theres a definate statement in this film.
This is really a highly political piece. Taking the concept of “Umshimi Wam” and letting it play out using our Schock-Pop cartoon charracters Ninja and Yolandi in Middle-class white suburbia.
At first I thought it was in bad taste with all the senseless violence – but then I realised it was a reference to the song. This is what the song is suggesting. Or endorsing. For me the film is not about Die Antwoord, but about “Umshimi Wam”, a song that clearly has no place or relvance in our society today.
I sense a bit of sarcasm in the “We are just so proud” comment – and I understand why. If we see this as a piece to promote South African culture then we clearly have nothing to be proud of! But this film is delving deep in South African issues and starting disussions. Art isn’t always beautiful, but good art gets people thinking and talking.
I give it 4/5.
5/5 would be a recut with less Fok’s and My blaars!
my 5c

Thanks Myles. You make some good points. There is indeed some relevant points that are being made by the film – they’re just made in a style that we find jarring. But saying that, they’ve succeeded in stirring emotion which is most of the battle won.
