Starbucks starts 2011 with a new logo
Posted on 11. Jan, 2011 by Jonathan Cherry in Branding
Perhaps the Starbucks staff were tired of the old logo or Starbucks is planning on being a brand that is much more than just coffee in the future – whatever the reason, the company has enveiled its new logo.
Gone are the words Starbucks and Coffee. Bigger and greener is the friendly-looking mermaid that has two tails following an unfortunate accident with a radioactive isotope from the Puget Sound.
We like it. Globalisation and African exploitation has never looked so pretty. Now all we need is for the Seahawks to make it to the Super Bowl and Seattle’s reemergence onto the world stage after the death of grunge will be complete.

When you say “Not available in South Africa”?
I know there is not Starbucks the way there is McDonalds, but there is a restaurant at one of the hotels at Montey Casino, in Johannesburg that do sell Starbucks coffee.
I would agree that because it is just restaurant-x selling the coffee it is a somewhat tainted experience, and the coffee probably tastes no different to how it would taste if they were selling illy coffee, but it is Starbucks coffee none the less… apparently.

I do believe that you may be right. Thanks Jonathan – forgot about that one.

It’s a melusine (siren), not a mermaid. That’s why it has two tails.

I’m in IT, so coffee is one of my four major food groups.
I tried Starbucks overseas. It’s nice. Nothing that great though. Their coffee tastes similar to Vida in my opinion.
I wouldn’t really go out of my way for Starbucks though.
Right now Origin in Green Point is my favourite. The coffee there is just incredible. If you haven’t tried it already and you appreciate a good cup of coffee, I highly recommend you go there.
