A Nando’s ad that you probably won’t see on South African TV
Posted on 31. Jan, 2011 by Jonathan Cherry.
Not because it’s too violent, or it involves hungry puppies that weren’t feed for hours so the ASA would ban the thing, but ’cause it’s Canadian – you will not be seeing this Nando’s anywhere but on your iThing.
And we don’t necessarily want to be encouraging this kind of lewd behaviour anyway.
Friday movie: Disney’s Imagineers – Scientists of Illusion

Disney have been designing interactive experiences for decades – this short film is a look behind the scenes of how they do just that.
How to really tell a brand story
Posted on 27. Jan, 2011 by Jonathan Cherry.
It won’t happen as a result of a cheesy user-generated ad campaign, or by a company’s ad agency hiring a flashy director to shoot something that looks authentic and real.
It happens when ordinary people tell stories of their lives in which your brand just so happened t0 play a part.
This film was made by an independent BMW enthusiast. The complete lack of selling and authenticity of it makes it something, unfortunately, a company would never be able to replicate.
Beautiful.
The Old Spice guy is back
Posted on 27. Jan, 2011 by Jonathan Cherry.
America’s Trevor Noah [aka The Old Spice guy] will be returning to the Internet with a new series of commercials set to air the day after the Super Bowl.
Old Spice and Wieden+Kennedy Portland, the agency behind the campaign, announced the return of the much-loved Guy, who will be featured in new adverts to air the day after the Super Bowl. [via]
Man are we relieved. The Internet just wasn’t quiet the same without him. Where would we get our man-training from if he had to disappear?
I Scream and the Chocolate Stix in a brand new SA reality TV show
Posted on 26. Jan, 2011 by Jonathan Cherry.
Few locally produced reality shows ever live up to their big budget American cousins. Ironically South African television probably pioneered reality television way back in the 80′s with a show called Skattejag. If you’re too young to know what that is – go ask your teacher about Scot Scott and flying choppers and all that good stuff.
But we’ve been sent a trailer for a new reality show called Making It that promises to reverse back time in a sense.
A relatively unknown band [I Scream and the Chocolate Stix] takes it upon themselves to grab fame and fortune by the scruff of the neck. Band Members along with their inexperienced management team tackle the music industry in a valiant attempt to make a living from what they do best. Will the band make it or give up on their dreams trying?
Let’s see, trailer looks entertaining.

Diesel and Adidas Original make sweet sweet love and produce…
Posted on 25. Jan, 2011 by Jonathan Cherry.
Brand collaboration was a term that was thrown around the Internet like a dog’s plaything a few years ago.
We all enjoyed the idea of it and joked about possible team ups between Marilyn Manson and the Catholic Church, but now Diesel and Adidas Originals have gone on a romantic date and announced their engagement.
Not since Brad and Angeline hooked up has the world been this excited.

2011 Ferrari FF
Posted on 24. Jan, 2011 by Jonathan Cherry.
In Asia, the place where the Ferrari brand is growing the fastest, it is not unusual to see an entire family + dog + lounge suite being transported at the very same time on the back of a 50cc Honda Dream.
It make sense therefore that as people in that part of the world slowly start replacing the people of the West as the wealthiest on earth, that Ferrari would therefore make a sports car that can transport an entire family + dog + Louis Vuitton lounge suite.
Hence the brand new Ferrari FF.

Salomon: Sell the experience not the product
Posted on 24. Jan, 2011 by Jonathan Cherry.
Found this series of Salomon trail shoe ads, which perfectly sell the experience that the brand offers rather than harping on the product. You’re not buying a shoe – you’re investing in your freedom.
Mark Visser surfs a 30 foot wave – at night
Posted on 24. Jan, 2011 by Jonathan Cherry.
Surfing at night – while wearing a vest covered in LEDs is an unusual thing to do. Doing that on top of a 30 foot wall of liquid hell is another thing all together. Here Mark Visser does just that.
“Riding in complete darkness meant I had to go off feeling,” says Visser. “I had to zone out from how you normally ride and just be a part of the wave. I am so pumped to achieve something that no one thought possible and that I was told couldn’t be done.” Watch a a video of his ride.
It looks like animation, but it’s not. See more here and here.
Oliver Peoples Eyewear ad is like a Roman Polanski film
Posted on 21. Jan, 2011 by Jonathan Cherry.
This short film is in fact an ad – for an eyewear brand. It’s everything an eyewear ad usually isn’t.
Starring real life couple Devendra Banhart and Rebecca Schwartz, the premise of the Oliver Peoples 2011 campaign is an exploration of authentic intimacy and sexuality. The love affair is explored in the one-of-a-kind masterpiece by architect John Lautner: Rainbow House. The contemporary California setting proved to be a perfect atmosphere to showcase the natural chemistry of the young, intriguing couple.
Feels like a summer’s morning after a bottle of chilled Champagne.
