Does this symbol calm your restless heart?

Seems like all of a sudden, everything from body lotion to panty liners is proclaiming to have been voted as the ‘Product of the Year’.
What the hell is this ‘Product of the Year’, who voted this stuff the best and should you seriously give a sh*t? Or is this yet another elaborate case of smoke and mirror marketing created by evil capitalists? We’re doing some sniffing around and will present our findings on the Capetalk Ad Feature tomorrow morning.
If you know anything about it and wanna share – get in touch.

Am always intrigued by this kind of advertising, I know in Australia they have certain laws ensuring that there is no false claims e.g We are better than that company, or This will make you lose weight! But its claims like this which always make me question who voted for them..and what kind of poll/survey was completed – if any. Will be interested to see what your research pulls up.

A little off topic but did you know…
Another symbol that I\’m sure lots of people have seem and never realised what it means is the circular CE symbol that you will find on just about every plastic item. From what I can figure out, it stands for European Certification for Health and Safety (as in safety, health, environment, and consumer protection standards)

Saw one of these ads yet again today. Managed to catch some of the fine print underneath though, for the first time:
\’As voted for by 5000 consumers\’… or something like that (it was morning, and my brain was not yet in gear)…
Not the world\’s largest sample, and for all we know, if someone voted in five different categories, they\’ve probably just used their \’creative licence\’ to tally that as five votes…

Hi Guys,
I manage Product of the Year in South Africa. We have been in existence for over 25 years years and operate on every major continent.
To answer some of your questions, we speak to a sample of over 5000 households. This is scientific research using a sample more that 2.5 times what is required to be statistically accurate (larger than anyone else that does research in South Africa).
We are actually a consumer body and are independently owned – no secret ownership by any manufacturer. We do this for you and would welcome any suggestions or questions. Mail me at preetesh.sewraj@productoftheyear.co.za.
Hope this helps!
