Fashion trends: Kirsten Dunst leads the way from Japan
Posted on 01. Sep, 2009 by Jonathan Cherry in Branding
Dressing up as your favourite cartoon character has long been a happy pastime in Japan. It’s kinda a Japanese thing though, you wouldn’t really have that much fun arriving at a street party here dressed as ‘Sarel Seemonster’, ‘Zett’ or ‘Mannemerak’.
But in Japan they have a different brand of cartoon character, so it’s cool to be them. Kelly Osbourne tried to promote the trend in the US a few years back and now Kirsten Dunst is getting her colourful kit on to take the idea Western.
Apparently this was all in aid of a music video shoot, but could also have been an ad shoot for Accessorize.
Check out the resulting music video here.
More pics here.

So a little rich white girl wears what young Japanese women have been wearing for years and now she’s “leading the way from Japan”? I don’t get it.

did you already know it was going on in Japan for years, or did the first sentence reading “Dressing up as your favourite cartoon character has long been a happy pastime in Japan” give it away?
I do, however, feel the article is mis-titled

hk: I think you might be thinking of those who ignore their body type / size when making clothing decisions.
Wearing japanese ’shinjuku’ styles in the west isn’t impossible if the person fits the clothing and what they wear is appropriate to their sorroundings.
But hell this is the internet; reason is rejected here. So, i’ll just follow the band of monkeys and ape on about how the author of an interesting article might be incorrect purely to gratify my small shriveled ego.

The person who says these pictures are “hot” needs to think again because she looks like a fucking bulldog.

OMG! you are all idiots! This was an art piece by the Japanese artist Murakami! Kirsten Dunst didnt even choose the clothes! Murakami choose HER to create a (tongue in cheek) \’western\’ view of Japanese culture. He\’s also created pieces for rich celebrities such as Farrell Williams. Author do your homework before talking about something next time please.
FYI the music video involved her prancing around singing \’I think I\’m turning Japanese\’. It was epic.

i agree Kate! why do you all have to make such a big damn deal about it? why do you care? she wasn\’t \"leading the way\" or ruining everything for you all, she was wearing what she was told to wear and she sure as hell doesn’t give two shits so why do you?

Awesome photos! Is this the female modern day Bozo the Clown? That is what I think of! But you know what fashion should make you smile and it most certainly made me SMILE!
Thank you for sharing the fun!

Agree with Kate, Jim and La.
It’s not like she was going shopping in these clothes so it’s obvious she didn’t choose them for herself.
Big up cosplay and Japan.

Cute, as long as she doesn’t move. I saw the video. Motion is not her strong suit.

I saw the Murakami exhibition at the Tate Modern some months back, and I LOVED IT, Kate thank you for actually noticing that there is absolutely no research done here. It’s unbelievable that even though Murakami could be on par with greats like Damien hierst, Warhol, and Kieth Herring, people think it’s okay to just not mention him. It’s appalling in fact that there is no reference information, or even any solid contextual research. Some G take the internet away from this Jonathan Cherry fool.

I stumbled here.
Then read the article.
Then read the comments.
You are all simple, boring, worthless tools.
I will never see this page again.
I don’t say this to be an asshole, I just want to give you all some perspective.
By the way I’m a PHD psychologist and have an MD in physics, so I’m smarter than you all, too.
Now, please analyze me based on the few words I typed, and call me ego-centric =D

We don’t even dress like this. Rich children in cities or celebrities do this sometimes. Look behind her please.
