So the Cape weather didn't exactly play ball at yesterday's BRAND HOOLIGANS marketing conference, but we had anticipated a torrential downpour and thanks to Capestorm, and the awesome ponchos that they provided, all the delegates [who were all real troopers, completely unfazed by the arrival of Hurricane Magda while absorbing the sights, sounds, smells and characters of Long Street] were kept snug and dry on the streets of Cape Town.

Huge thanks also to our other partners: Tradewinds parasols, Steenberg wine estate and the Grand Daddy Hotel.

And to all of our speakers, your stories about creating exceptional brand experiences were inspirational. Thank you.

The dolphin tail that will send you to heaven

We're still getting used to blow up armbands and an inflatable ring with red crabs printed on it – and now they've invented this…

It's a 'biomimetic swimming aid' – which means it's something that somebody from nature already uses that has now been adapted to be used by humans.
This is a flipper, based on the age-old design of a dolphin's tail and apparently if you slip your feet into the dolphin shoes and give it a go, it'll generate enough power to boost you out of the ocean.

Watch out for Michael Phelps and a pair of these things at the next Olympics.
Why stop there? They should make one based on a whale's tail that'll boost you to the moon.

Adidas goes ‘Inside the Black Jersey’

If spending some insightful time inside Richie McCaw's sweaty togs is your idea of entertainment, then you're going to love Adidas' latest rugby short films, which they shot as part of the All Blacks 2008 Grand Slam Tour. We're obviously not a fan of the All Blacks, but Adidas really are the masters of great branded entertainment right now.

Now we're not sure who the jersey sponsor of the Bulls is, but let's hope it's not Adidas and they go the route of spending time in the Bakkies Botha jersey during scrum time. Things could get messy. Go Bulls!

2012 London Olympics proposed posters

We're really happy for the London 2012 Olympics that they have a fine set of proposed posters for their event. We're not sure just how 'proposed' as apposed to 'approved' these great examples of clever graphic design are, but they do highlight the lack of proposed 2010 FIFA World Cup posters we have floating around.

Gareth Cotten is a man that sees the world through 'matrix-like' glasses. Show him a street in the city and he'll immediately start scratching away in his moleskin, a tight list of businesses that he'll have a business plan for within an hour.
At a little over 24-years of age he has completed a seriously advanced tax honours degree as well as a BComm undergraduate degree from the University of Cape Town. He owns Chariot Limousines, a limo company that he founded just a few years ago while studying, which is re-inventing luxury private travel in Cape Town…and that's just in his spare time.

We'd call him driven, but in most cases he does the driving [which keeps him close to his clients] and makes it all look so damn easy.
As a highly trained accountant he doesn't mince his words or opinions when it comes to bright marketing ideas. He says it as he sees it and makes it happen before the ink even dries on the paper of his dog-eared notepad.

Morph returns to the streets of London

If like us you grew up in the 80s – you'd be a big fan of Twisted Sister and Morph, the plasticine creation of Britsh artist Tony Hart.

A couple of months ago, an army of morph characters staged a flashmob outside London's Tate Modern as a tribute to Tony Hart who recently passed away.
It was pretty much single-handedly because of Morph and Tony Hart that an entire generation even learnt to draw and it's only now that we fully appreciate what it must have taken to produce those frame-by-frame shows.

MWEB totally redeems themselves by getting Lost

We weren't doing snappy backflips on a trampoline when we saw the first MWEB ad featuring the Facebook guys (since then we have however grown to appreciate the subtle nuances of the message), but we're well impressed with their new installment called Lost.

The final helicopter shot of the old BP and Safmarine building reversed out to give you that 'going-away' effect is masterful. Looking forward to the rest of the series from FoxP2.

Some say that he never sleeps, because he spends his evenings redesigning Cape Town's unfinished highways on a giant to-scale model built with used toothpicks. And that on a recent trip to Hawaii he consumed and entire virgin Pina Colada, that was served in a plastic pineapple, in one continueous sip.

All we know is that his name is Porky Hefer and this profile piece is too short to do justice to the awards and world-class creative work that has been produced by him. Having worked as an creative director in leading advertising agencies in Johannesburg, Cape Town and New York City, he's now set up his own creative agency, Animal Farm, with a mandate to radically change the way we see, interact and experience the world around us.

Smaak jy die nuwe BMW Z4 advertensie?

For our foreign readers 'Do you approve of the new BMW Z4 advert?' That would be the one featuring a Z4 Roadster doing powerslides on a giant canvas – almost as if Jackson Pollock was invited to be 'the star in a reasonably larney car' on Top Gear.

Although a little trippy, we don't find it at all that bad. Lots of paint and 45 cameras can turn out to be a 9 and a 1/2 weeks sequel…or a pretty graphic way of illustrating the Z4s handling and how much fun you can have with some pre-school educational equipment. There is apparently a 30-minute documentary version of the whole thing which aired on Discovery in the US, which you can look out for if you're a fan.
