Cups for Votes: Your vote scores you a free cup of hot brown at Wimpy

Posted on 20. Apr, 2009 by Jonathan Cherry.

This Wednesday, after you've made your cross at the polling booth – you can head over to a Wimpy and collect a free cuppa joe thanks to your ink-stained finger, which serves as proof of your participation in democracy.

We always just thought that this kinda crafty election-based promotion was the reserve of Starbucks and American politics, so it's great to see that Wimpy are bringing some political PR innovation to SA.

Giddy up!

Louis Vuitton’s designer QR Codes

We here at Cherryflava work extensively with QR codes in the urban games and killer secret events that we produce for our clients. Up until now however the code itself has always looked like something a big digital bird would drop out of it's arse.
But now Louis Vuitton and Japanese designer Takashi Murakami have teamed up to create unique QR Codes for LVMH that look good enough to lick. Well, ok…maybe not that good, but they look much better than digital bird droppings.

Low res Shane Warne moustache

Ok, so before you run off to see if your furry kitty has met with its horrific demise at the entrance to ol' Warnie's shnozz – it's not really as bad as this photo would suggest. The ace Aussie spinner is indeed wearing a fake 'stache as part of his IPL team's [the Rajasthan Royals - who are based in Cape Town] marketing campaign.

Global sports brand PUMA, sponsors of IPL champion Rajasthan Royals, have launched a fun campaign to promote the team by encouraging fans to wear giant moustaches.

Fans are encouraged to visit the website www.itgrowsonyou.net where they can download and print a moustache to wear to games. Besides generating a suitably fun atmosphere at 20-20 games, the campaign also enables fans to win Rajasthan Royals t-shirts if they upload their photographs to the It Grows on You fan page on Facebook.

So if you're going to the game tomorrow and wanna get into the essence of the Royals, then get the mo' and fluff the fro'. One time. Good on ya Warnie.

Car election billboards pick up speed…well, some of them

One of the features of the election this year is the new trend of 'vehicle branding' that seems to be really popular with the ANC and DA. It's not uncommon to see JZee's face on the side of CLS with darkened windows or Helen Zille completely dominating an entire bus, but this particular vehicle seemed to be held together with papier-mâché.

Perhaps his voters can throw a few coins into a kitty to pimp out this old, dodgy bus. Something befitting a man of his stature. [thanks to The Skim for the pic]

National Skirt Extension Project: All is revealed

The National Skirt Extension Project was unfortunately not for Axe deodorant [as we had speculated] nor for a political party [as we had suggested] – but rather was for Mrs Ball's Chutney.

The mysterious half-page newspaper and sneaky adio ads promoting a campaign to have the skirts of the graphics on ladies public toilets lengthened has now been revealed to have been done as an ad campaign for Mrs Ball's chutney.

Mrs. Ball's wanted to show just how silly it is to change
something for no good reason, so we invented the National Skirt
Extension Project, demanding that all ladies' toilet signs be replaced
with a version bearing a longer skirt. To those who stood up and said
"This is ridiculous", clearly we agree. If something doesn't need
changing, don't change it. That's why at Mrs. Ball's, nobody changes
our chutney. … Thank you for being such good sports … No cyclists
were harmed in the making of this video.
[from the YouTube video]

There's no doubting the campaign caused a huge amount of buzz, but we have to admit are just a bit more than a litlle surprised that South Africa's favourite condiment is behind the whole thing.

NSEP = Mrs Ball's, NSEP = Mrs Ball's, NSEP = Mrs Ball's – that one may take a while to sink in.
It that for real – or another cunning twist to throw us off course?

RFID tags + iPhone = everyday things that turn into DSTV

RFID tags and cellphones are two concepts that wouldn't be out of place in an episode of Buck Rogers – so we can rest assured that they belong in the future. Now some clever dick has married the two together to create a possible situation where everyday objects magically transform into media channels.

Imagine a bottle of Bushmills having a video clip readily available for you to watch on your phone the minute you came close to it in a bottle store or under a pile of blankets in the kids nursery. Augmented reality media is on it's way, but it'll be a while before the mass of ideas and concepts starts to settle down. This example is however a great one.

Blast from the past: The Puma I-Cycle films

About a year ago we checked out the Puma I-Cycle project, which is kinda like the old BMW films – but with bicycles.

Five short films sponsored by Puma all about recycling bicycles. Having now finished watching the second season of Californication, we've gone back to these again. There's something about recreational cycling [less lycra, smaller egos, no petrol] that's just crying for a revival here.

Inspirational business card design idea from Japanese designer Ji Lee. You can download the template and print your own 'Google me' card here.

We're going to have ours mocked up and printed out in two shakes of a lamb's tail.

Final result should look something like this:

National Skirt Extension Project: Now causing carnage on our roads

National Skirt Extension Project lamp post signage is so effective, it's causing cyclists to forget that parked bakkies are indeed solid objects through which a bicycle does not pass. [video link] Mwah ha ha.

National Skirt Extension Project: Short skirts are a no no

If you haven't heard – some rather strange ads promoting a National Skirt Extension Project have been printed [half page B&W] in this week's Sunday Times and radio ads have been flighted on 702 and Cape Talk.

There is a website, a call centre hotline [0860 111 412] and a reference to a company by the name of Oscuro as registrar of the website.
It's too late to be an April Fools joke, too expensive [our estimate is in the region of R350 000 so far] to be a hair removal cream teaser [besides - no hair removal cream would possibly be promoted in the lead up to winter] and the production quality of the various elements is too poor to be linked to a corporate client.
We called Paul at Oscuro [which is based in Pretoria - could be relevant] who stumbled over an explanation claiming Oscuro to be an ISP, but when we sniffed around we uncovered an old Oscuro brochure that claims that the company are 'creative connoisseurs'.

So – considering the media buy and the possible events that it could be linked to [elections, World Cup 2010, Easter] – our conclusion is that the whole thing is leading up to a campaign for a political party.
There is rumour that the media was purchased through an account owned by Unilever, but that may be a 'trailer breaker' done on purpose [or not].

Out of all the random copy on the website – there's one small paragraph that leads us to our startling conclusion:

Clue

Our guess, it's for COPE or the DA [or Axe deodorant, as we attempt to reveal below].
