Channel O’s Miriam Makeba tribute
Posted on 17. Nov, 2008 by Jonathan Cherry.
We’ve only seen Miriam Makeba perform once. That was a couple of years ago at the North Sea Jazz festival [as it was called in those days] in Cape Town.
She performed in the auditorium [where they usually have the Design Indaba conference] and by the mass of people scrumming to get into the venue that night, it was a clear indication to aliens from Mars that a legend was about to appear.
If you really want to be a true supporter of South African music, do yourself a favour and try see the legends [Hugh Masekela, Abdullah Ibrahim, Tony Schilder, Vusi Mahlasela] live before they too carry on with their journey.
Talk to somebody – use no words

Based loosely on the concept illustrated in this awesome old Cell C ad, we’re hosting a very different kind of new media presentation this afternoon for a lucky group of foreign participants in the streets of Claremont.
Our bank of Nokia N95s are certainly going to be put through their paces. The ad itself is one of the best Cell C have ever made, but perhaps a little before its time.
Toilet rumour
Posted on 14. Nov, 2008 by Jonathan Cherry.
The best way to promote a new restaurant, hotel or nightclub is not necessarily via an elaborate advertising campaign or with fancy PR in glossy society magazines. The real solution could be as painful and expensive as making sure that you have really kick ass toilets.
Not the cheapest strategy, but by far the most effective – funny how it often works that way.
Check out more of this collection of great public toilets over at the coolhunter.

Hyundai talk from experience
Posted on 13. Nov, 2008 by Jonathan Cherry.
Years back in the days when milk was delivered in glass bottles and men wore facial hair not as a fund raising effort, but as a serious fashion statement – there were a series of luxury car ads all making claims about their ability to survive the trip around Chapman’s Peak drive.
Ironically all the cars still exist, but the road between Hout Bay and Noordhoek is in it’s glory – maybe had it been fixed by Land Rover Toyota Landcruiser engineers it would still be in working order today.
In the spirit of those old school boy tactics, Hyundai recently took a stab at the failing Seat brand with this ad, which was published in the Sunday Times and Rapport.
Ironically once again, it wasn’t too long ago that the Hyundai brand was threatening their customers with withdraw from South Africa, so perhaps speaking from a position of experience adds a good degree of street cred to this statement.
Our suggestion – if you’re worried about your car’s support structure going bang and leaving you all alone to service your car yourself – get an old 1983 Mercedes Benz 200 [which will survive a direct nuclear missile strike]…or a Landcruiser.

Facebook for dogs…designed by South Africans
Posted on 12. Nov, 2008 by Jonathan Cherry.
Actaully Sniftag is more like a speed dating service disguised as dog ownership.
According to the marketing info: Sniftag is a sleek, little
pet accessory that combines wireless sensing and social networking technologies. The makers came up with the idea when they
realized that although dog owners in Boston Common [USA} meet every day, they do not
connect or make friends. By recording encounters with other dogs in the park
and automatically downloading the information once home, owners can connect
with other owners in a safe and easy way. [thanks Tasos]
The success of the social networking side of the product will obviously depand largely on the number of units which are purchased. At $299.00 for the starter kit it’s not cheap, but then that also ensures a filtering of inappropriate riff raff dog owners that are going to waste your valuable coffee date time.
Update: Almost forgot to proudly mention that the product was designed by a South African company by the name of Readymade. Nice one guys.

Proposed Cape Town public transportation plan
Posted on 11. Nov, 2008 by Jonathan Cherry.
Try and keep this one hush hush…to yourself technically.
It’s estimated that we have more than enough natural sources of water to make this proposal possible and an over abundance of citizens willing to take their kit off for the greater good of the city. Bless them.
We’ll take a couple of return tickets to our 10h30 in the CBD thanks.
Puma Ocean Racing branding: Acceptably hot
Posted on 10. Nov, 2008 by Jonathan Cherry.
Looking like a mixture between a Prince music video and a Samantha Fox poster – we find the overall attractiveness of the Puma branding on this year’s racing machinery rather good.
A black 3D leaping cat on fire engine red background connected to a sliver of high-tech carbon fibre, which can go at a fair clip when the wind blows is a crafty way to sell a lifestyle brand.
According to Jonty Fisher, these little moving water billboards cost upwards of R125 000 each – which may seem like a lot, but in the world yachting ‘expense’ is a dirty word.
We took a few more snaps and posted them here. Unfortunately the wind was not blowing enough for the bladeriders to race – so you’re just going to have to use your imagination when it comes to action shots.
This weekend in Cape Town: Puma presents ‘Bladevertising’
Posted on 07. Nov, 2008 by Jonathan Cherry.
If you’re looking for something to do this weekend in Cape Town – go check out two PUMA mini il mostro foiling Bladerider Moths take on three South African craft in a Bladerider Moth Regatta at the V&A Waterfront this Saturday and Sunday.
The regatta is the first event of its kind in Africa and the PUMA craft will be sailed by Martin Gravare, who represented Sweden at the Olympics, and Rohan Veal who is the 2005 and 2007 Moth World Champion.
Five craft will take part; three from South Africa and the two PUMA boats. PUMA Ocean Racing are currently in town with their yacht il mostro competing in the Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09.
The racing will take place outside the harbour breakwater between 10am and 1pm, weather permitting, and the public will be able to view the action from the pier. The moths will take part in 3 to 4 races with each race taking 20 minutes to complete.
The aim of the regatta is to demonstrate the foiling moths to the public during the Volvo Ocean Race stopover at the V&A Waterfront.
Bladerider Moths are one of the fastest growing small boat classes in the world. Lifting out of the water in just five knots of winds and achieving boat speeds of over 25 knots in 20 knots of breeze, these boats dart around on their hydrofoils just like their namesakes, moths in the night. [thanks Cecily]
We caught footage of the ocean race on TV the other night and it has to be said that the Puma ‘blackcat’ branding on their mainsail is simply remarkably sexy. Looks good enough to lick.
While you’re at it, check out their pop up store and the ocean racing simulator that’s sure to make to wanna revisit your breakfast.
