Woodstock’s street gallery
Posted on 04. Sep, 2008 by Jonathan Cherry.
Dustbins assigned to suburban homes in Cape Town are not exactly and oil paintings, but some believe they should be.
Five Black Bins brings together five Cape Town design studios to
redesign five garbage bins in Woodstock, Cape Town. The urban design
project was conceptualised and curated by non-traditional agency, Cow.Five
random addresses in Woodstock were selected. Designers were briefed to
use the bin as a canvas but to take into consideration the context of
its surroundings as well. Am I Collective, Cow, Kronk, The President
and Room 13 were the five agencies that got involved.Once the
designs were completed, bespoke vinyls were printed. The selected bins
were abducted, the vinyls applied and the transformed bins were
returned to their homes.
Top idea! Hope Cherryflava cracks the nod to take part next time. We have a few sneaky ‘design’ ideas up our sleeves. [thanks Donald]

Invitation: Play with your streets
Posted on 03. Sep, 2008 by Jonathan Cherry.
At last week’s Creative Cluster meeting we presented our various ideas for turning the Cape Town inner city into a playground, so it stands to reason that we’re loving this ‘bus stop swing’ done by Bruno Taylor.
If you watch the video, it’s amazing how apprehensive people are at first to play like kids again…until they realise that nobody is watching them.
71% of adults used to play on the streets when they were young.
21% of children do so now. Are we designing children and play out of
the public realm? This project is a study into different ways of bringing play
back into public space. It focuses on ways of incorporating incidental
play in the public realm by not so much as having separate play
equipment that dictates the users but by using existing furniture and
architectural elements that indicate playful behaviour for all.It asks us to question the current framework for public space
and whether it is sufficient while also giving permission for young
people to play in public.Play as you go…” Bruno Taylor." [via Wooster Collective]
On that note – if you would like to be added to the mailing list for an afternoon game of ‘street bingo’ which we’re organising in a couple of weeks time in Cape Town, please let us know by mailing: tips [at] cherryflava [dot] com
Top Gear confirmed as one of the UK’s most powerful brands
Posted on 02. Sep, 2008 by Jonathan Cherry.
Who would have thought that three middle-aged men clowning around in borrowed supercars almost getting arrested in every episode would become one of the UK’s most successful media brands [ahead of Top of the Pops and those David Attenborough shows].
Top Gear yesterday charged across London’s Tower Bridge in a stretched
version of an armoured personnel carrier to launch a £20m world tour
that will act as a template for other BBC "superbrands" to be taken on
the road. The live show will visit 10 cities in its first year, including
Johannesburg, Sydney, Auckland and Hong Kong. Each location will host
at least 10 shows, with Top Gear Live playing to a total of more than
300,000 people.
It’s no wonder Jeremy Clarkson was presumed to be running for Prime Minister. With the amount of money he’s making now he’ll be able to buy parliment faster than you can say Bugatti Veyron.

Caravan design: Not exactly the old Jurgens your uncle used to live in
Posted on 01. Sep, 2008 by Jonathan Cherry.
Just in time for next year’s Tour de France outing, the humble caravan has been given a design makeover by and Austrian company called Graz.
An online application generates the design based on a customers specifications resulting in no two caravans exactly the same…[via]
Looking more like a room at the Daddy Long Legs hotel than something you’d find in a trailer park, it’s a giant step forward for mobile home living.
