Would you ditch your Titleist driver for a frisbee to save the environment?

Golf courses are huge environ-busters.
They suck up tonnes of drinkable fresh water, require loads of chemical fertilisers and kidnap family men for 8 hours at a time over weekends when they're meant to be spending time with their tantram throwing kids. In the US, probably because the country is technically bankrupt, golf is radically declining in popularity.

In its place....disk golf or frisbee golf. The flying disc game doesn't require a stiff upper lip or a bad attitude, the equipment is much cheaper and the course can be put up anywhere (parking lot, forested area, old age home garden) and does not require a dedicated body of water to keep it alive.

Disk golf hey? Sounds a bit like polo on Segways, but we'll give it a bash if a games going.

Plans to turn Joburg airport into a disco

Perhaps it's because OR Tambo International airport in Joburg is finding the task of functioning as an airport such a challenging one - it seems there may well be plans to transform it into a very large disco.
Yesterday. this large mirror ball must have just arrived at the domestic arrivals area and is now ready for its erection.
Or maybe this thing was left in the passenger 'lost and found' and they're just not to sure what to do with it now and are still hoping somebody will come and collect it.

Maybe it may have something to do with those rather strange teaser ads, featuring some guy washing a giant disco ball in a car wash? We did some of our own scratching around on the net and may have uncovered the pending ad campaign that this thing is for....

The top 50 most shocking ads of all time

In that list is this 1970's pinup of Burt Reynold's showing off his 'stuff' for DIRECTV HD. Come to think of it - now that we see this truly repulsive image, we could swear granny had this exact poster secretly posted on the inside of her pantry door.

Good thing we don't clean ourselves like cats do, otherwise by the looks of things poor old Burt would be in a constant world of pain with all the fur balls he'd have to deal with.

Who would have thought that the crowd favourite at the hall disco in the Ceres 'Dennebos' would ever come back to haunt us all and rise to become an Internet phenomenon set to rival that Chuck Norris wave that washed over us all a few years back.

Twinsaver on a mission to 'take the kids to the pool'

Remember the Twinsaver radio ad featuring the new roll of 500 'sheeeets' - well, there is a new one [shudder], which by all indications will never flight on any South African radio stations, but rather rely on the Internet to get their message across. [have a look see here]

There's nothing like a bit of toilet humour to get your point across.

Spoke about this old SABC 1 ad this morning - which ironically after being banned, has received a new uncensored life online. Great ad - what a pity it was taken off air.

Classic bicycling is the new Crocs

With local petrol prices set to skyrocket by another R1 per liter on Wednesday, vehicle usage and the associated costs are now no longer a joke - and viable alternatives are seriously desperately needed.

The general perception surrounding the idea of cycling to work - or just about anywhere for that matter - usually involves lots of sweaty spandex, very expensive metal alloy-framed spacecraft looking machines and fist fights with taxi drivers.

But it seems that the re-emergence of the trend of 'cycle chic' in Western countries is really making a strong comeback.
A classic bicycle with bell, basket and normal clothing is very fashionable right now.
Accessory suppliers are popping up all over the place selling bags, baskets, stylish helmets and old-school bikes.

The opportunity to open a lifestyle lifecycle-type shop is huge in student towns like Stellenbosch and Grahamstown.
Maybe what's also needed is that city centres like the Cape Town CBD also need to make bicycle lockup areas more accessible and widespread so that the fashion catches on here too.
One to watch closely.

Eskom should start charging royalties

Instead of hiking the cost of electricity by whatever percentage they hit on the canteen dart board, Eskom should charge the long line of ad agencies using its brand name in vain, a small commission.

This billboard for the new Seat Cupra, which can be found on Joburg's N1 highway, gives the national electricity monopolist another deserved bitch slap in the face.
Now if someone else could deliver a swift kick in the nuts to the Reserve Bank Governor, maybe he'll consider easing off on his interest rate increases - making even the mere thought of buying a new car, a viable one.

Future advertising trends - according to Leo Burnett

In the future - there will be screens everywhere and according to Ben Hourahine, Futures Editor at Leo Burnett (London) ads are going to follow you around like that nasty rash you picked up that one night a few years ago.
So according to Leo Burnett, you can look forward to even more urban spam and a lot less branded time by yourself to appreciate things not pasted with a logo.

However, a stack of these 'predictions of the future' seem to be happening already - or maybe we're also 'futurists' and just don't know it yet.

Squatter camps are springing up outside cities...in the US

It seems like every month now, the US Federal Reserve cuts the American interest rate, while at the same time our guy hikes ours upwards.

How does all this economics jibba jabba affect you if you're not directly invested in the JSE? As the old saying goes - if America catches a cold, the rest of the world comes down with pneumonia, so prepare yourself for an extended period of challenges.
Thanks to the current US credit crunch, tented cities are mushrooming on the outskirts of LA so report the BBC.  The end of the American empire - or just a bump in the road?
