Proposed world subway systems completely ignores Africa
Posted on 14. Dec, 2007 by Jonathan Cherry in Design
Can you believe it. In a proposed subway system for the planet [shown here] the line basically ends in Algiers.
The rest …ending in what could be Cape Town…is under construction [the only section that is] for the foreseeable future. Now how on earth are we going to conveniently populate the world with starving refugees if you don’t send a line down here people?
You’re distributing criminals by sending a train or two to Australia.

Huh, They’re proposing an under construction section? That doesn’t make sense?
It’s a proposal. The whole thing is under construction, and when it’s complete, they’ve set aside a permanent under construction section?

Ha, the cheek of it. And they wonder why Africa is such a mystery to some. Unbelievable. What’s even more unbelievable is the lack of imagination when constructing the map – it’s the London Underground Map plonked (with a bit of stretching and shaping) on top of a map of the world (also manipulated).

Reading the actual text below the image it says:
“This playful diagram shows all the cities which have, are building or planning to construct an urban rail system. It is the opening page of a new book about the graphic design of subway, metro, underground and U-Bahn system maps and diagrams…”
I guess our rail system design is so bad it did not deserve mention.

Eich, Munich – my own home town – is on the Jubilee line… what a perfect match — who the hell has done that map? Obviously that person had quite a strange sense of humor… :-/
Greetings to everybody in my favourite town Cape Town!
And even if they were to extend “District Line” to Cape Town, I would have to change twice at least to get from “The world city with a heart” down to “Mother City”… still a long way to go
