Took time out from all things uncivilized by heading down the Orange River with Felix Unite.
For four days you navigate your way down 70km of pristine water track in a canoe with a few fast-flowing rapids thrown in to keep you honest. The pics unfortunately just don’t do the views, or the experience, justice.

Technical art direction [like the lack of rain in the shot] aside, perhaps Wonderbra are onto something here. An umbrella you don’t have to actually hold would sell like a pirated DVD.

‘Tis the season to be wary

It’s the festive season, and in the Cape it’s also fire season. With soaring temperatures and tinder dry alien vegetation just waiting for a British tourist to flick a burning cigarette butt at it, the incidence of ‘Malibu-style’ mountain fires is real and sadly common.
To help raise awareness around forest fire prevention, new local agency The Animal Farm commissioned ‘The carpenters shop’, an NGO setup to teach woodwork skills to the homeless and unemployed, to carve 65 fire extinguishers from alien trees.
It’s the alien trees that drink all the water, suck up all the light and most of all spread their seed when they burn.
‘Our hope was to create a general awareness around fire prevention by installing these extinguishers, mounted to alien trees, across all major forests and walkways in Cape Town.
All 65 extinguishers were installed over three days spanning across the entire table mountain national park, from Signal Hill to Kalk Bay.’
Great idea – and yes, it will be interesting to see how long they stay on the trees. Lets just hope that they’ll not removed and used to mug hikers. [thanks Warren]
Free business idea: Toilet humour

Apart from the stack of magazines and preferred PSP game titles which go nicely with quality time spent in the WC, the common toilet is rather devoid of entertainment.
Step up the budding entrepreneur and the realisation that their is an entire universe of untouched porcelain canvas on which to decorate and make casual statements.
Vinyl toilet graphics could easily spread like a salmonella infection if left unchecked and if you’re sharp and witty enough, an entire cottage industry of profound statements and movement inspiring images could line the pathway to your black Vanquish S and luxury condo in Clifton.

The Cool Hunter, one of our favourite online reads, has got a fascinating collection of creative work environments for your browsing pleasure.
Makes sense that if you’re wanting to extract the maximum level of creativity and innovation out of a group of people, you would design a whacky work space to facilitate that process. The use of shipping containers in large warehouses catches our eye in this set.
Reminds us of the ‘chair and sheet’ hiding structures we used to design way back in those formative years.

Can you believe it. In a proposed subway system for the planet [shown here] the line basically ends in Algiers.
The rest …ending in what could be Cape Town…is under construction [the only section that is] for the foreseeable future. Now how on earth are we going to conveniently populate the world with starving refugees if you don’t send a line down here people?
You’re distributing criminals by sending a train or two to Australia.

We’re loving the old ‘Scort in this ad for Roadkill toys. Squashing furry bunnies with an old Ford is the prefect ingredient for a successful viral campaign.
