Design your own car idea picks up speed

Car modification (you know…the branch and free flow exhausts, racing stripes, K&N airfilters, chipping, spoilers) has been a big thing in backyard garages for decades.
Movies like that fast and furious series and MTV’s ‘Pimp my ride’ have further dropped hints to car manufacturers that a clear desire exists for people to customise their own cars… and now finally, it seems they are set to take advantage of the trend.
Nice ad from Mini announcing their range of customisations, we just wonder why it’s taken so long for the big car brands to realise that a whole industry exists just to make their products more appealing to their owners.
If only they’d just opened their eyes a bit sooner.

Whether or not this takes off, in South Africa at least, will depend in part on how customisation affects resale value. The 702 Word on Cars presenters usually advise callers against after market customisation as this has a negative effect on value. If manufacturers themselves offer accessories, this would help alleviate those concerns.
Still, regardless of who fits your wheels with additional bling, you’ll probably still look like a sad poser.
