Video: The new Sasol Springboks ad
Posted on 01. Aug, 2007 by Jonathan Cherry in Advertising
Thanks to the previously mentioned Jupiter Drawing Room for sending us the much debated brand new Springbok rugby ad.
Yeah – the new fantasy one where every member of the team turns into a flesh eating, green muscle bound killer monster.
So what do you think?
We personally like the ad. Sport is entertainment, entertainment is escapism. Why not show our national rugby heroes as Marvel-like monsters?
See it: YouTube link here.

Eish. Don’t quite know whether I love it or hate it.

I think it’s an embarrasment, such a blatant rip off of the 300 and unfortunately when you try to rip off something like that you need to do a better job. And unfortunately Keith Rose’s ad is a pale shadow of the 300.
Also dislike the concept, 15 men aren’t taking on the whole world, they’re taking on 15 other men…

Now, if only they could play rugby as well?

I agree with Matthew. I felt embarrassed when I saw the ad.

Ok, so you rip off a movie, dandy the players up by putting them in suits (clearly they are not tough enough on their own) and then you devolve the boks some 300 million years that they run around like apes. Come on!!! I feel sorry for the boys in green – they are not taking the whole world on (or 15 other men – well spotted Matthew) they are taking on a bunch of palookas who call themselves creatives (even though they blatantly ripped the idea). Well done your mommies must be so proud!

Odd the regression to running on all fours!? Check out my thoughts @ http://eishcoza.blogspot.com/2007/07/mutant-springboks-what-does-it-mean.html

If there’s something that you can say is that “technically” it’s very well made. But creatively this is a pretty poor effort that makes the previous commercial look genius by comparison. They look silly in those suits. Instead of copying 300 they should have maybe just utilized the technique.
You want to learn how to market a rugby team take a lesson from Adidas and the All Blacks.

Springboks, SA Rugby and perhaps SA Sport in general: nothing original, progressively more shitty, and sinking to more and more embarrassing depths at each opportunity. What a spastic 300 rip-off!

Do we HAVE to make Schalk look more like a neanderthal?

I wonder if this ad had anything to do with the recent decision to take blood samples to test rugby players for performance-enhancing substances…

I think this is a GREAT ad. Others with negative comemnts are not viewing this ad in the correct light. And yes, they are only 15 players……taking on the Rugby World. The Springboks have done great so far and are excellent ambassadors to our country. More than I can say from some of the citizens with only negative comment. Viva the Bokke!!!!

Im a design student (I don’t support rugby)but from what I’ve learned, I love what they did with the affects. It takes allot of time and effort to make a ad. Above all the remarks, well done to the !!work!! they have put into it. It just gives it a better feel for how South African we are setting it in a dark stormy environment, giving the overall feeling to the toughness of the players- Its a good concept and something different from the usual boring rugby ads
