So hot right now: I’m NOT a plastic bag
Posted on 22. Jun, 2007 by Jonathan Cherry in Design
Take a wild, flying guess what the hottest, must-have fashion accessory in the US is right now.
No – not the iPhone, or a newest creation for DKNY or D&G….it’s a $15 grocery shopping bag with the words ‘I’m NOT a plastic bag’ printed on it.
Hours before the much anticipated shopping bag went on sale in NYC this week – people had started queuing outside the Anya Hindmarch store to get their hand on one.
Limited to just two bags, almost everyone in line had plans of purchasing both and selling off the extra.
Within three hours the bag, being offered for
the first time across the U.S., had sold out of every Anya Hindmarch boutique
in the U.S.
All this hype – just for a simple, canvas grocery bag. No joke.
Clearly the global trendiness of being an eco-friendly, carbon neutral citizen is taking off in a big way. And as with all things – give South Africa a couple of years and we’ll be scrambling to snap up one of these things.
Canvas bag manufacturers please get into contact with us via e-mail. We got some orders to place.

I think it’s more to do with being able to get a reasonably priced limited Anya Hindmarch bag…

I have read an awful lot of nay-saying posts about this bag in the last few days. I think your post should address some of the controversy. It isn’t simply a trendy bag.

Well – the bag is most probably made in China in a smog-infused hellhole of a factory.
It’s likely to be assembled by a 12-year old girl who gets paid the equivalent of 50 000 Zim dollars a minute and a cold bowl of gruel for her efforts. And the screen printed wording is made with a lead-based ink, which will eventually decompose to cause blindness in cockroaches.
But it’s all business. Anya’s laughing all the way to the bank and brand eco-friendly scores another mega-hit while the polar icecaps continue to melt faster than a Hummer on an LA highway.
Just like Al Gore showed – there’s mega bucks to be made by aligning yourself with the environment. All the same – it’s better than doing nothing at all.

I’m desperately looking for the Anya Hindmarch “I’m Not A Plastic Bag” bag i’m in love with. I live in Barbados, Caribbean, but it is not available here. Can you please tell me where I can buy it? Please don’t tell me eBay.

I waited 3 hours in line on June 20th, at Holt Renfrew in Montreal and managed to get a couple. I later resold one for 100$
To those who complain the bag isn’t ethical-
It doesn’t really matter where it’s made, or what it’s made out of… The point is, people who like this bag will want to use it and that in itself can reduce the consumption of plastic bags.
The goal wasn’t to diminish child labor or cheap labor in China.
If people like this bag and decide to use it as an alternative to plastic shopping bags, then the message and goal is effective.
People who want this bag know its intended purpose and ultimately it’s a personal choice to stop using plastic or not. The bag itself doesn’t make a difference, it’s the attitude people adopt.
The message is boldly imprinted on the bag so it’s promoting awareness and a 2nd look at things.
Like if you bring it to a supermarket where everyone is packing their stuff in plastic, they might think twice next time.
