The ‘Make Africa Wealthy’ campaign video
Posted on 25. Jun, 2007 by Jonathan Cherry.
You want to help Africa – ignore Bono and stop giving your money away. Rather do business with us – we don’t need your charity.
Interesting presentation from the Nigerian Finance minister presented at this year’s TED conference.
Clearly she’s a Cherryflava fan.

The most anticipated gadget launch of all time is just one week away and The Onion has a detailed list of the most important features potential users can look forward to playing around with.
- Nanotechnology enables it to reassemble itself when thrown against wall
- Exclusive link to Google Street View so you can watch yourself using your iPhone at all times
- Prominent Apple logo
For the rest – check out the important scoop on The Onion.
We only want one if it comes standard with an alarm tone featuring Steve Jobs himself gently whispering; "Awake – shake dreams from your head my pretty child my sweet".
So hot right now: I’m NOT a plastic bag
Posted on 22. Jun, 2007 by Jonathan Cherry.
Take a wild, flying guess what the hottest, must-have fashion accessory in the US is right now.
No – not the iPhone, or a newest creation for DKNY or D&G….it’s a $15 grocery shopping bag with the words ‘I’m NOT a plastic bag’ printed on it.
Hours before the much anticipated shopping bag went on sale in NYC this week – people had started queuing outside the Anya Hindmarch store to get their hand on one.
Limited to just two bags, almost everyone in line had plans of purchasing both and selling off the extra.
Within three hours the bag, being offered for
the first time across the U.S., had sold out of every Anya Hindmarch boutique
in the U.S.
All this hype – just for a simple, canvas grocery bag. No joke.
Clearly the global trendiness of being an eco-friendly, carbon neutral citizen is taking off in a big way. And as with all things – give South Africa a couple of years and we’ll be scrambling to snap up one of these things.
Canvas bag manufacturers please get into contact with us via e-mail. We got some orders to place.

…no, not us – the Manchester Orthodontic Centre. These teeth were sent out to all the clients and other relevant people just before the change of address.
A cracker.

Banned ads: Shocking Amy Biehl Foundation ad
Posted on 21. Jun, 2007 by Jonathan Cherry.
We’ve personally never seen this ad flighted, but now that it has been banned – our attention has been diverted from our morning check on the markets to the recently outlawed TV ad for the Amy Biehl foundation.
There’s something hugely unsettling about this commercial.
We’re not sure whether it’s the images of kids threatening to hi-jack everybody or the melodramatic music score, but it’s probably a good thing this was turfed.
Our suggestion to the foundation – why don’t you show us what’s possible with our donation rather than trying to scare the living daylights out of us.
See; Amy Biehl Foundation – Best rejected advertising
BTW – it also looks like that Hyundai ad where the poor scorpion meets his maker at the end of some literary capable chic’s foot also got the can. Could have sworn it was on just the other night.
iCatching: Imagine a city where outdoor ads are banned

The Best South African television ads…ever.
Posted on 20. Jun, 2007 by Jonathan Cherry.
We had a minute or two to catch up on some long overdue magazine reading – and studied with some intent the latest Financial Mail Adfocus supplement.
Alistair King from King James, lists his top 20 South African ads of all time. Here are a few that caught our eye:
Number 1: BMW ‘Mouse’ – a true 80’s Hunt Lascaris / Keith Rose classic. Marketers are to this day still briefing in jobs to their agencies with the instruction that they want a BMW ‘Mouse’ ad. A no-brainer for top spot.
Number 3: Fiat Palio: ‘Bicycle’ – the movie theatre favourite. Long after it’s TV media stint, the agency was still running this at movie screenings much to public entertainment value. Comedy won the placing here, but worked well for Fiat on a brand level too.
Number 7: BMW ‘Landspeed’ – Although with production budgets as big as those throw at TBWA in it’s hayday it was hard for them not to make a cracking commercial for a car brand – we however grew quiet attached to this spoof version done by Oglivy for VW Polo.
BTW – it’s interesting to note, that out of the 20 top ads Mr. King chose – 11 of them were for vehicle related brands.
Now, that could be because back in the day, those were the guys with the big bucks – or the directors were just more motivated to shoot car stuff, rather than baby powder ads.
Another observation, is that Keith Rose directed 6 of the top 20 ads, making him the most successful SA director.
Obviously the selection is going to be highly subjective and most of ads on the list are from way back when production budgets where supported with a blank cheque. But we enjoyed the flight through SA marketing history.
We would’ve, however, slipped this one in just for good measure .
It’s a kind of deja vu
Posted on 20. Jun, 2007 by Jonathan Cherry.
Doesn’t this look familiar? That’s right – it’s MTN again, ‘adapting’ videos from YouTube.
Granted their ‘Hand clap’ ad is pure genius, but there’s still something really easy about finding cool clips on the net and then charging your big cellular client mega-bucks to rip them off.
Is this part of the strategy?

Bear chair
Posted on 20. Jun, 2007 by Jonathan Cherry.
We’re always on the lookout for additional items and furniture for the Cherryflava HQ.
Recently added to the wish list – is this panda bear orgy lounger.
Only problem is that it’s a limited-edition item, with just 25 being made [probably one chair for each bear used], and was created and made by Brazilian brothers Fernando and Humberto Campana.
What could be better than directing our global operations from one of these?
