Hi Andrew / Jonathan
Thanks for the mention -- and for visiting! We considered the flag and out-and-proud route but, three things made us go the route we have:
1. there is a difference between 'South African content' and 'content that interests South Africans'. Zoopy is home to both. So just because every video on the homepage doesn't contain boerewors and rugby doesn't mean that we aren't hosting content that is essentially 'South African'. If a user living in Springs wants to see and share Britney shaving her head, it's just as interesting to us and other Zoopy users as a regte egte episode of Swart Kat or Riaan Cruywagen reading the news.
2. for this reason, we don't want to be exclusionary. south africans living abroad or someone married to a south african or anyone interested in south africans should not feel like we've created an exclusive club that says no thanks to others.
3. the logo, advertising and imagery is already quite strong on the site and we were concerned at the aesthetics of adding more to this
4. with all of this said, if you read our About Us page (http://www.zoopy.com/about_us.php), I hope you'll get the feeling that through all of this, we're flipping proud of our country :) But why shouldn't we able to be proudly South African without the flag. We're sincerely proud .. and we thought that putting up a flag just for display would be a little kitsch.
Hope to see you on the site. Please keep the comments coming!
All the best
Jason

Its a tough market to break into and even in SA the YouTube brand is strong (even though its not the best).
Perhaps Media24 will see the benefit of doing a Google in buying the site for themselves at some stage.
Real benefit would be that they niche themselves in the South African market only. Only local content. Perhaps it has legs to share local TV content eventually.
But good point Andrew.

Interesting that when you arrive on the home page you can't see anything that relates to South Africa (other than the braai picture in the latest videos). The Title in your browser says "South Africa's first..." but there is nothing on the actual page, not even a flag. It's an interesting ommission - if they're truly trying to reach the SA market you would think this would be splashed everywhere as part of their unique offering. If they're trying to take on the world, then why put SA in the Title?
