Extreme tourist destination marketing
Posted on 01. Mar, 2007 by Jonathan Cherry in Advertising
Forget about cheesy tourist marketing lines like; ‘Discover Taiwan / Nepal / London / Singapore [or insert your city here]‘.
Every city in the world seems to be selling themselves the same as everyone else.
Except Victoria (which we believe is in Canada – just north of Seattle) – where the search ‘for the best damn time of your frikkin’ life’ ends.
Its just a pity that nobody wants to publish their racy ad, which is seen as too hectic and controversial for public viewing or consideration.
…‘your search for the perfect orgasm is over’, which was intended to
refer to the region’s restaurant scene. In its official communiqué
Seattle Times stated, ‘We felt the content of this ad was inappropriate
in its context and would be objectionable to a wide audience.
Good thing you saw it here. Passport in order?

We’ve always felt that South Africa should market itself as an extreme destination. Forget about all the images of animals and Table Mountain. Market the adrenalin rush of walking through Hillbrow at night. The complimentary advanced driving certificate you’ll receive by just taking a rental car for a spin along the N2.
Now that’s remarkable stuff – and you’re going to have queues of adventure tourism junkies lining up to give it a bash.
Every country to the north of us has giraffes and lions, but not many are packed with as many thrills.

For me, extreme tourism doesn’t have to be something “shocking” – how about getting out and doing something unusual or doing something unusual off the beaten path .. but I gotta say a nice bit of adredaline is always good too! If it is something where you can use all your senses and walk away with some knowledge, all the better.
I’ve been lurking on a site, http://www.extremetourist.com/ .. it is about extreme tourism, but takes a broader view. Found a good blog about an aussie chap and his experiences in Eastern Europe on there.
