De La Rey gets dumped

Here’s a classic example of a missed opportunity. De La Rey (the hardware store – not the no. 1 RSG block-busting ‘hand op jou hart’ hit) has changed its name to ‘Builders Warehouse’.
The reason?…. we’re not aware of it, but with a wave of controversy being created by the infamous Bok van Blerk song, their timing to jump off the wake couldn’t be worse.
Then again – maybe they changed their brand name because of the De La Rey song?
All the same – its just a crying shame when established brands do this. Builders Warehouse sounds like any other corner ‘hammer and nails’ shoppe. De La Rey, although meaningless, was different.

Agree with you 100% cherry, drove past the de la rey near century city and thought wtf? de la rey is de la rey *period* we’re still gonna be calling it de la rey for a long time, everyone knows de la rey hardware. builders who?

Builders Warehouse is the larger group (themselves owned by MassMart, which also owns Makro) which acquired De La Rey recently. It’s a simple corporate acquisition (not that they’re ever simple) that’s been planned for quite some time, just a pity the controversy thing popped up just now!

I am a black South African. Ban De La Rey, and South Africa contradicts itself as a Rainbow nation where everyone, black, white, indian, coloured, chinese are regarded as equal citizens. By banning De la Rey, they (Censorship Board) are saying the Afrikaaner does not have a place in our society, they are saying that the Afrikaaner does not have a voice.
Its just a song that envokes pride among the Afrikaaners, and there is nothing wrong with that.
And those people that say the song has racial overtones, shame on you, you don’t know what the hell you are talking about. Learn the history before you criticize.

Lunga, I take my hat off for you! I am a white person and are sick and tired of the word RACIST! Why does everything have to be racist. Bok van Blerck wrote a song about HISTORY he isn’t mentioning anything about now and today. Why can black, brown, white, Indian all stand together when it comes to going to court and protess about but they can’t stand together when it comes to South Africa and OUR believes. Each and everyone has a history and why should we deny it. Every country has their own history, for instance like Ireland and St Patricks Day, the 4th of July, why should South Africa be so full of stupid issues.

i got this email and I think the south african goverment should take the HUGE chip of their shoulder and move on !!! The people of SA are already getting along and everytime the racist card is played it is done by the goverment……Why are the ones saying it ts wrong still using it as leverage??? The bastards in parlament has done so little for the people since 94 and not a lot of them is any better of?????

There are over 60 openly-proclaimed
Black-only Colleges in the US ,
yet if there were “White-only Colleges”
… THAT would be a racist college.
In the Million Man March,
you believed that you were
marching for your race and rights.
If we marched for our race and rights,
… You would call us racists.
You are proud to be black,
brown, yellow and orange,
and you’re not afraid to announce it.
But when we announce our white pride
… You call us racists.
You rob us, carjack us,
and shoot at us.
But, when a white police officer
shoots a black gang member
or beats up a black drug-dealer
who is running from the LAW and
posing a threat to ALL of society
… You call him a racist.
I am proud.

Why is it that only
whites
can be racists?
