Nano_1Right now – this 2GB Apple iPod Silver Nano  (second generation  – that’s important) – is the No.1 selling MP3 machine on Amazon dot com’s list of ‘Top Selling’ players.

So if your kid / girlfriend / wife / neighbour / parent or mistress requested an MP3 player as their Christmas gift this year – this puppy is actually what they’re referring to.

The amazing thing is – that no matter how much advertising  you see for other brands of MP3 players – your final purchasing decision, or ‘desire index’ will most likely, automatically be influenced by these top ten lists and the unbiased shopper’s popularity rankings of retailers.

Hell – if everybody is loving this silver iPod and you were just about to buy a black Zune [No. 19 on the list] – is there something seriously  wrong with you?

Good thing those retailers don’t tamper with those powerful, top selling rankings.

BTW – Apple branded products make up 8 of the top 10 at Amazon.

After all the special equipment you have to buy, Telkom line rental fees, call costs and the R39.95 ‘pay as you go voucher’ [which doesn't work when you most need it] – its probably cheaper to get a Telkom 4 Mbps DSL connection.

Surf ‘n Turf? Think you should just stick to the ‘turf’ bit. We’re going backwards here.

Who’s going to do us all a favour and use their massive corporate marketing budget to sponsor free Wifi for the whole of SA.

FCB’s love of lions continues

DraftFCB is the ad agency which is responsible for Vodacom’s ads.

Right, well – we all remember the infamous Leeuloop commercial, which has now been yanked and replaced by a new ‘channel-changing-indicator’ featuring, local crooner, Dozi whining about a horse.
We understand the significance of this with regard to a cellular service provider even less than the ‘leeuloop’ one.

The lion love fest continues at the agency – here’s an ad from Draft FCB (which is probably a recruiting arm of FCB international) congratulating all the winners from last summer’s ad festival in Cannes.
The copy reads:
‘Its good to be on top. Congratulations to all the winners.’

Yes – we know what you’re thinking – the art direction is shocking.

Makes us wonder what those two pesky meerkats are going to get up to next.

Nike’s trial van: Take the shoes and run

Even big companies like Nike understand the importance of getting people to steal try their products.

The running shoe division have, what they call a trial van [its actually a mobile Nike shop], that sets up near popular running routes and races -  and invites people to give their shoes a go. No string attached.

Unfortunately it seems like the promo is only available in Europe at the moment, but our thinking is that this would work brilliantly if set up on a Saturday morning at Constantia Nek or on the Sea Point promenade.
The people that usually hang out there could do with a nice new pair of shoes.

Indian motorcycles: Jump starting a heritage brand

IndianIf somebody had to buy the rights to the Springbok Radio trademark and fire up a radio station – would the reborn brand of old thrive once again?

One of America’s oldest brands, Indian Motorcycles, has recently been bought and the new owners are dusting the old loyalties off and preparing to make a roaring comeback.

Founded in 1901, Indian beat Harley-Davidson to market by two years and
invented the brawny "cruiser" class of bikes that defined American
motorcycle style. Yet poor management after World War II pushed the
company into bankruptcy in 1953, and production of all Indian
motorcycles halted for nearly half a century. Efforts to resuscitate
Indian in the late 1990s, first by a Canadian investor group and then
by a Boston-based private-equity firm, ended in Chapter 11.

There’s no guarantee that the revival will be successful, but if the new owner can tap into the essence of what made the brand successful back when it started and replicate that for today’s market – they’re laughing.

We’re wandering if Scope magazine is still up for grabs…
