Recycled, designer, cheap, brilliant Freitag shop
Posted on 11. Oct, 2006 by Jonathan Cherry in Design
We spotted this in the latest issue of Wallpaper available here is SA – which probably means its a bit old.
All the same, this heap of ugly shipping containers, is the new Zurich shop for recycled bag brand Freitag. [Freitag uses truck tarpaulins, bicycle innertubes, car seatbelts and used airbags to create designer freeawaybags]
Unlike the container shops that we have in SA – this is the first shipping container skyscraper.
The store is 26 metres high and built next to a busy highway with 17 rusty, recycled freight containers. On the top is a telescope to do some truckspotting.
Although it looks a bit like the Freitag owners were trying to save money with this cheapskate move, the recycling of these containers really suits the brand.

It is actually built on Sheikh Zayed Road, about 5km before the board. The buildings on the board also lights up at night.

I’ll bet the guy they’re building next to has mixed feelings about the thing – not exactly downtown Zurich is it? Then again, I’m sure it’ll generate some footflow.

It actually is a really cool construction! Its in an area called “Kreis 5″ where all the old warehouses are being/have been turned into lofts and trendy clubs…so not too disturbing to the villas of the rich and famous… Inside, the top floor is fantastic…! The Freitag bags are extremely popular in Switzerland – and aren’t exactly cheap either
