World’s best contraband advertising

Funny how as soon as you slap a ‘banned’ sticker on something – it suddenly becomes iconic. We should pen that as a marketing lesson.

‘Build your brand by getting it banned.’

Good example is this ad for Italian fashion brand Marithe & Francois
Girbaud, which was banned via court interdict after the Catholic church thought it a little cheeky.

The display was ruled "a
gratuitous and aggressive act of intrusion on people’s innermost beliefs", by a
judge.
Just goes to show that ol’ Dan Brown really got away with mass murder.

The Vatican must have a team of lawyers on a retainers chasing everyone from Madonna to Mr Brown and still fighting an appeal from Ozzy Osbourne.

Loeries_1Its a shame – but gone are the heydays when being a creative director was all about the quality of the blow and quantity of the tail.

The ad industry is now a serious business, where wearing a FCUK t-shirt in a client’s boardroom is a no-no. Everything is tracked and measured and accounted for and only a team of 10 people are allowed to attend the Loeries…not 12.

Anyhow, if you still watch TV or bother to turn on a radio then you might actually recognise some of the work which has made it though to this year’s finals. [Loerie award finalists announced]

Some agencies don’t understand anyone

29082006052According to UCT’s Unilever institute -  a large segment of South Africa’s black middle class believes marketers
and advertisers are making stereotyped efforts to connect with them.

According to the study, members of the group felt that two extremes
were portrayed in marketing communication: the stereotypical black
economic empowerment "fat cat" living in luxury, and the domestic
worker or labourer.

We’d have to say, that its not just the black middle class that should feel stereotyped by SA ad agencies. Take a careful look next time at how all race groups within South Africa are portrayed in advertising. We’re either boxed in as brandy-drinking, rugby mad, wors eating, verbally challenged fools or taxi-driving, pre-paid-phone-card-obsessed, hiphop lifestyled pimps.

Maybe its just easier that way.

LaptopJust in time for the English Premier league season kickoff – Fujitsu Siemens have teamed up with Everton, Aston Villa, Spurs and perennial European chaff Celtic and produced these branded laptops.

Its rumoured that they also approached the Springboks to develop a branded machine complete with jumping bok on green and gold trim, but then realised that the South African national sports brand didn’t have any supporters left….and CTRL-ALT-DEL’ed the idea.

Boobs on bikes = Outrage

BoobsonbikesJust like beating the Springboks at home – effective, global advertising is just so simple.

Once again, its breasts which have caused a national outcry, this time in New Zealand.

Last week, thousands of people lined the main street
of Auckland as 25 topless porn stars
paraded on motor bikes and two old army tanks.
Businessmen, schoolboys and Japanese tourists lined   Auckland’s Queen St to watch the "Boobs on Bikes" parade which is part of an   "Erotica Expo" organized by self-styled "porn king" Steve Crow.

Many of the curious onlookers came with cameras and mobile telephones
to take pictures of the parade. Others held aloft banners which read
"Sleaze Brings Disease in Body & Mind."

Here’s the loophole in the Kiwi constitution however – police allowed the parade to go ahead because, New Zealand   law does not regard the public baring of breasts as indecent.
