City_greyYou know – running a highly successful media company from Cape Town can be rather difficult.

Cape Town is a sleepy place. People come here to relax, see the sights, join a gang, dabble with drugs, but generally….to chill out.

That’s why – to keep us on our toes, it would be better to line the HQ with a wallpaper cityscape of Joburg.
Complete with concrete highway and Ponti building skyline.

That would sure get our minds on the work and off the flippin’ mountain and the constant sound of tik bulbs bubbling down on the street – drowning out the mellow sound of the sea.

Ok – this example of ‘city grey’ isn’t Joburg, but there’s an idea that thousands of Cape Town businesses would jump at if someone made it.

Bathroom mirror ads on their way

Ad_mirrorHold onto your skirts girls – very soon Revlon might just be suggesting a new shade of lipstick when you’re enjoying your privacy with all of your friends in the bathroom.

Some media company have figured out how to hide ads behind mirrors. The company plans to
roll out its advertising product around the world starting this month,
which it test marketed in 300 fancy-schmancy bars and nightclubs in
London. [via]

What the hell next?
Urinals have already been played around with and attacked to carry interactive advertising massages messages and now you can’t even primp and preen yourself without being reminded to chew on a Mentos.

Just leave the toilet seat as it is please.

Free business idea: Organic plant food

Terracycle_1We recently caught a rather odd news feature from a local broadcaster, going on about how the Mount Nelson had taken the innovative step of employing earthworms to chomp the leftover food from the hotel and then using the worm excrement as fertilizer for the Nellie’s gardens.

Yeah -so?

Well – now we hear of a very successful US business doing just the same…and more.

Terracycle was started in 2001 when two Princeton University students set out to
change the way people do business. Inspired by a box of worms, these
students had a dream: a company could be financially successful while
being ecologically and socially responsible.

The company’s flagship product, TerraCycle Plant Food™, is an
all-natural, all-organic, ‘goof-proof’ liquid plant food made from
waste (worm poop) and packaged in waste (reused soda bottles)!

Genius indeed. These guys have put together a business that cleans up the place, feeds plants and worms, generates its own positive PR, employs people and makes the owners heaps of money. Everyone’s laughing.

No Logo

There are more and more signs that Naomi Klein’s crystal ball could we’ll have been working the day she wrote the book ‘No logo’.
We also coughed and blew bubbles when we read that people would grow tired of our precious logos and expensive marketing hype.

‘Corporations have long attached themselves to
large-scale events that attract a youthful audience – most notably
music festivals.

But now big brands are creating niche, low-key events that are low on audience but high, they hope, on cool.

As Geordie rock group Maximo Park whip the crowd into a
frenzy at what is easily their smallest gig since they made it big,
there is nothing obvious to tell you that this is all courtesy of
T-Mobile.

But while the room has not been adorned with overt
corporate badging, there is artwork in the unmistakable pink of the
company’s logo, on otherwise white walls.’

Could cigarette advertisers had been given the greatest marketing gift of all, by a government trying to restrict them. Ironic.

Check this fine example of ‘we want one’ plumbing.

The quote on their website:

      “A whimsical potty that turns your toilet into a nautical wonderland” – and we’d have to add that this is an essential accessory to any business environment.

This aquarium comes with some fake plants, a filtration system, and a
seat with an "Under the Sea" motif. It uses half of its reservoir to hold your goldfish, meaning its probably not the most powerful flusher in the world, but good for water restrictions when they make a comeback.

It cost US$450, but the reaction you’re going to get is clearly priceless.

WalkmanWhen Apple launched the limited edition black US iPod – it was cool. But that was a while back now and we got tired of waiting for the Celine Dion version – so we’re over it.

For a while now Sony has been fighting the Apple flava’d world of MP3 players. A good example is the Franz Ferdinand branded Walkman.

Sony Japan is doing a limited edition of 100 Franz Ferdinand encrusted
DAPs. The front will copy the jacket design of the band’s "You Could
Have It So Much Better" CD, and the back will have photos of the band
members. The player will also hold a special message from the band, and
an autographed card.

Now what would be slick is if you could have your new player customized with your favourite band when ordering.

Do it Sony – just do it.

BTW – new weapon in their assault against Apple is the new torch-like MP3 player. Nice.
