Guerrilla movies

Even we’re not old enough to remember the drive-in.

According to legend, there was a huge drive-in cinema in Goodwood [where GrandWest is today] a couple of decades back. Zebras also used to roam free and chew grass where Mavericks is today.

Blankets, Cortinas, beer and picnics were the order of the day along with heavy petting and not a great deal of movie watching.

The idea might be set for a rerun however.

California-based MobMov is a drive-in movie system built into a car, that pops up at different locations every week.

MobMov, which is short for mobile movie, was founded last year by
Bryan Kennedy, a 25 year old web developer who wanted to create a
guerilla drive-in for his friends. Before long, friends of friends
joined in, and MobMov went public, with movie showings announced
through mailing lists.

The set-up is relatively simple: install a DVD player, projector,
and power inverter into a car, and use a low-power FM transmitter to
share a movie’s soundtrack to nearby car radios. [via]

Obviously its a nice social get-together idea, but could it be a nice opportunity for independent film makers in Africa to get their movies to the audience?

It seems that getting a small movie onto the circuit is most of the problem here – so this idea easily bypasses all the BS and gets the show on the road.

Interbrand’s Top 100 Global brands 2006

Coke_logoBreaking news:  Youth brands are the clear winners in this year’s list of the top 100 global brands.

At top spot yet again is Coke with an estimated brand value of $67 billion. That’s a %^$ load of sugar water.

Its also no surprise that the top 5 brands are all US – Nokia making an amazing return to glory at no. 6.

There are no South African brands listed – not even De Beers made it.

Google up 46% from last year at 24 and Apple up 14% at no.39.

With no advertising and images that make up distant memory, Marlboro romps in at 12 way ahead of Pepsi.

Zidane’s infamous World Cup final head-butt display – is probably the cleverest marketing trick ever performed. The guys retired, but nobody will ever forget him, and he’s now a superstar in Japan.

The most awesome thing about New York City, apart from the amazing billboards in Times Square, are the shops. Even if you hate shopping – you’re going to need a clamp to keep your jaw in its place when you explore the retail maze of NYC.

But, that was before China discovered the beauty of capitalism. Check out this kids bookshop called Kids Republic in Beijing, China.

Advertising around the world seems to follow a similar creative trend.

One of South Africa’s best creative directors, Porky Hefer, once told us that when your brain produces a thought – it goes into the collective global creative realm..and if you don’t use it quickly, someone else will.
On the local front; Nedbank are / have been running a campaign [TV and outdoor} built on the idea that everyone has a basic need to be an entrepreneur at heart - just listen to your inner voice.

Now Land Rover are taking their similar concept of 'Go Beyond' to the next level in a new ad campaign and related minisite. [via]

The ad is long and perhaps a bit like a Deepak Chopra seminar, but it touches a nerve. Its good advertising. Life is an adventure, not a nine-to-five, air-conditioned hell hole of pointless 3-hour meetings and fluorescent light tans. Get out, see more, take the wrong turn, do more.

Make people question the status quo and then offer a solution – an alternative, a choice.
Stunning production work, excellent grading and narrated by Ewan McGregor – this is one of the best ads we’ve seen this year. Stunning.

Behold the eminent release of the brand spanking, sexy new D80 which is a 10.2 megapixel Japanese imaging geisha – set to replace the aging D70.

No word yet on its specs, South Africa debut date or price.

Guerrilla shopping is bitchin’

Remember back during the local elections here in Cape Town, there was a weird poster campaign featuring all those ugly people trying to score your vote?

Ok – good…now, do you recount the posters of the dog called Mickey Munden who was also trying to get elected? [we stole one and still have it lurking around the office].

Mickey Munden confused everybody – even clever local  talk radio presenters who usually never get confused.

Check it – Mickey’s back in the mix in Cape Town with a clothing line called Los Cojones Del Perro [which translated means 'the balls of the dog'] and a very unique way of selling it.
Its called ‘guerrilla shopping’ and the idea is that the range is sold at a venue for a set period of time, via invite. As far as we know, this Friday is their first ‘launch’ event.

Here’s the weird thing though, even though they haven’t yet officially launched – they’re off to the ‘Magic’ fashion trade show in Las Vegas to represent Cape Town this August.

We thought their initial marketing campaign with the dog was fairly left field for Cape Town – so hopefully they can translate that creativity into something different and less mundane than the usual from a business perspective.
The guerrilla shopping thing reminds us of a Tupperware party , but hey – its unique and definitely one way of avoiding retail rental costs and generating word of mouth.

We’ll be there – if only to tickle the dog.

Brainstorming toy

AutomobloxIf you’re needing a good creative injection to spark an idea – you can’t do anything useful if you don’t have cool toys to throw at each other.

We always thought that big foam dice and coloured balls did the trick, but now we have to spend the $35 to get one of these. [Doh - we forgot about the shipping rates; make that $135]

Automoblox is an American toy brand that’s kicking against the flow of PS2/3 games and the plastic robots with flashing lights; and are creating and marketing ‘build-up your own cars’ made from wood. Its like car Lego but made of wood.

They’re actually supposed to be educational toys for kids, but hey – we’re all kids at heart and these things look desirable to us.

Now we can play ‘West Coast Customs’ right here on the boardroom table.
