Computer on or off?
Posted on 30. Nov, 2005 by Cassandra.
Here’s a question that many people wonder about.
Is it better to turn off the computer or can I just
keep it on all the time?
The New York Times has the answer:
One older argument for leaving the computer on was that turning it
off every night and starting it up again in the morning caused strain
on the hard drive – because the magnetic heads that read and write
information inside the drive had to start up as well, and could damage
delicate parts. But the hard drives in most modern computers park their
heads when the computer is turned off, and starting back up is a much
safer process than it used to be.
It does take an extra bit of
electricity when the computer pops on after being shut down, but the
amount of power is less than what would be consumed if the machine was
left on continuously. [Via]
Now you know.
Cruiseliners for the undead

How cool is this – the ‘Valley of the Waves’ all neatly tucked into a cruise liner.
This is a FlowRider which is planned for the desk of the soon to be launched Freedom of the Seas.
Like RC’s other new ships, the Freedom will have a rock climbing wall,
an ice skating rink, a spa, shops, and several restaurants. But it also
has something that no other ship in the world has—a FlowRider. Built by
Wave Loch Inc. of La Jolla, the FlowRider
is a recent (but not new) innovation in water park technology (video
demo on their site). Similar to a lap pool, it creates waves and
simulates current by passing 30,000 gallons of water over the ride
surface. This will be the FlowRider’s first installation onboard a
ship, which is pretty impressive. It also promises endless lines for
the opportunity for one "surfer" at a time to enjoy it.
RSS reader Google style

Since our initial observation that there was tension surrounding Google’s monopoly of the Internet….the bad press is exploding.
But we’re going to have none of it. We still love Google. And here is this week’s wicked new product…..Google Reader.
If daily, you read a ton of websites like we do, it helps to make use of a RSS reader. There are lots out there, but we kind of really like the Google version. It’s free on your Google account and has an uncanny ability to predict what kind of news you like reading. Check it out.
MCQP gear up
Posted on 24. Nov, 2005 by Cassandra.
Last year was Jungle Fever and the wind blew.
This year it’s on at Ratanga Junction – the wildest place in Africa, 17 December….and it’s going to be a circus.
Seriously – that’s the theme….It’s a circus.
It’s almost time for the MCQP – Cape Town’s biggest queer drugfest fancy dress party…which frankly, unless you have a valid excuse (like you’re out of the country or something) it would be rude not to gather a small team together and get down there to cut a few steps.
If you’re too damn lazy to think of a creative theme, the site has some suggestions like:
Afro Acrobats & Asexual Animal Trainers, Bisexual Bongo Bearded
Ladies, Colossal Catchers & Comely Contortionists, Clowns &
Dopey Disco Dwarves hit on Ecstatic Erotic Elasto Girls, Funky Fudge

Tattoo now

Not only must this fine example of body art be worth a fair number of rands, but to get this much detailed ink injected under your skin must have taken general anesthetic.
All the same, this is clearly awesome artistry.
If you are thinking of getting another tattoo, but you’re fresh out of inspiration check out legendary tat blog Needled who believe "One must be a work of art or wear a work of art."
Tattoo trend site also worth a visit is Tattoo Now. They’ve got loads of the latest artwork to browse and if you live in the US, an artists classifieds.
Otherwise….just be a tattoo voyeur and browse the Flickr tag to see what the planet is up to…..or if your love E! here are all the celeb tattoos you can think of.
Evil in a box
Posted on 22. Nov, 2005 by Cassandra.
If you are anything like us…you own a PS2, but when it comes to actually choosing games to play on the thing, you tend to gravitate to the titles with nice covers and snappy names.
It’s for this reason that we make use of a gaming consultant (somebody who knows how much we hate solving stupid cryptic clues, but love emptying a couple of Desert Eagle magazines into a barrel to see if it’ll blow up) before we go splash loads of cash on cyber entertainment.
Our man’s recommendation for those relaxing upcoming quiet day’s is the recently released Resident Evil 4.
In short; you find yourself walking around a rather misty town which is packed with useful arsenals of weapons which you can use to dismember zombies that are intent of getting in your way.
The major plus points: Incredibly amazing audiovisual presentation;
excellent, bloody, in-your-face shooting action; suspenseful, lengthy
storyline keeps you guessing; astonishing boss battles; plenty of
extras give lots of replay value–separate ways side story exclusive to PS2.
But don’t take our word for it, IGN gave it a 9.5 Gamespot posted it at 9.3 and it won game of the year at this year’s Spike awards.
So if you want to eliminate evil…you can join the Scorpions or get this game.
Google base
Posted on 22. Nov, 2005 by Cassandra.
Aaaahhh Google. What a wonderful business story. Everybody loves Google.
Go to any braai nowadays, and even non-geek South Africans have stopped recounting crime stories and are talking about how awesome Google is.
So….here’s news on this week’s new Google product/service.
It’s called Google Base – and is basically an online global classifieds which is taking on the likes of Craigslist.
Example – we found this awesome playboy mansion right here in Cape Town, sitting right on the front page of the rental section. So like all things Google…it’s wicked. In fact, here’s information on how you can import your blog onto Google base to make it list better on their main pages.
But, the Google brand’s success might just be their own eventual downfall. Americans are starting to realise that their beloved ‘dark horse’ is taking away from others and getting a bit too powerful for their liking. Check out this story on Gawker linking to slander in the New York Times. Plus, they’ve now found out that the new service is also quickly being infested by porn.
Proof that bigger is not better.
Dress up your leads

Nothing could be simpler that this, but you’re going to wonder what’s wrong with you when you realise how many times you’ve rebooted the DSTV and blown the TV tube just trying to unplug the PS2 to plug in the VCR, all because you didn’t know which cable belonged to the PS2.
To even the odds a German design firm has come up with these cable ID tags.
Cable ID is a rubberhelix complete with a display for labelling. With
the help of Cable ID it is easily possible to identify any cable.
If multiple sockets are crowded with cables or cables have to be
unplugged from time to time – cables always look nearly identical and
it is hard to find the right plug.
Simple, but brilliant. [Via]
USB Christmas tree
Posted on 21. Nov, 2005 by Cassandra.
It would be rude to go through a Christmas without some gawdy, cheap, seasonal decorations.
It seems like all the rage right now are those big shiney wire and bead trees that are being sold in Woolworths and other very overpriced retail outlets, hoping to cash in on your holiday cheer and refusal to buy one of those nasty pine excuses at the side of the road.
Here’s what we’re getting. Still smelling like a Chinese sweatshop…it’s a USB Christmas tree which includes wind blown snow from an internal fan, a music player with a medley of Christmas carols, and
features either Santa with his sleigh, or a girl with a mobile phone.
And it’s white…which will coordinate well with the Mac. Buy 10 000 direct from the factory here. Or you can checkout this lesser wow-factor tree here. [Via Engadget]
This week in Lusharazzi
Posted on 18. Nov, 2005 by Cassandra.
Our sister site has been busy in it’s first week.
The girls have been destroying the new crocs shoe brand, finding expensive things in their drinks and have found an online shop that sells chocolate packaged as lipbalm.
Big thanks to Joblog, Tomorrowconnecting.biz and Biz-community.com for the kind plugs and the big welcome.
