Quiet reflection
Posted on 15. Dec, 2004 by Cassandra.
It’s been a full year here at Cherryflava…starting on 1 January 2004, we’re now nearly one year’s old. Cherryflava felt that it would be kind of rude not to reflect on the year that was……so here goes…..
By far the post which created the most international bantering was the whole Sketchers ad hooha. Nurses across America flamed us and Sketchers for a couple months and due to the story on this site…Sketchers eventually gave in and canned the ad.
We did a fair bit of travel to Johannesburg, Mozambique, Upington, Namibia and Natal. Went snowboarding at Tiffendell and cycling in Knysna
There were lingerie shows and related protests in the US.
We got famous…twice and even threw a quiet party….
We’re now in need of a holiday…the sun is shining, the Cape Town beaches are welcoming and it’s time to step away from the computer screen. So posting has come to an end for this year…but we’ll be back in 2005. Got a couple of things (an event or two) planned for next year so stick around.
Thanks for reading, commenting and contributing…have a great holiday.
Musica shoots…misses
Posted on 14. Dec, 2004 by Cassandra.
Musica…the local music retail brand….has finally decided to take a tentative step into the online downloadable music market.
Musica MD Colin Robb said: "The international download market is growing apace and as South Africa’s largest retailer, Musica, had to be the first to offer a download service here. Our customers would expect us to offer the service and, as they already know and trust our brand, we’re confident that they’ll feel safe and comfortable buying music online through the Musica website."
Huh???? What is unsafe about buying music online that your brand is going to offer us that other international brands don’t?
Musica is gonna whack you R10 a track…which is a complete ripoff compared to Apple’s iTunes which is 99 US cents (+-R5.80)….and the Musica option doesn’t support Mac users…there goes all of the agency creatives that might have been interested in using the service.
Sure you are definately going to be able to get local tunes not available at the big global sites, but other than that…stick to the professionals.

PICTURES OF THE YEAR 2004 – South Africa’s Lyndon Ferns (L), Roland Schoeman (C) and Darian Townsend (R) celebrate after the team won the men’s 4×100 meters freestyle relay final at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, August 15, 2004. South Africa ruined American Michael Phelps’s dream of winning a record eight gold medals with the victory in the race.

The Mother City of all parties
Posted on 13. Dec, 2004 by Cassandra.
If there is just one party you go to in Cape Town this year…then this has got to be it.
The MCQP, along with the Met, has become Cape Town’s premiere dress up party.
This year’s theme….Jungle Fever. No dressup = no entry.
Date Saturday 18th December 2004
Time 9pm – 9am
Venue ARTSCAPE Garden
Tickets R150 – available at CD Wherehouse, V&A Waterfront or R200 at the door.
So what’s the party all about?
Cape Town is made up of many queer tribes. Once a year, in December, they all get together for Africa’s biggest Queer tribal gathering – the annual MCQP costume party. This unique home-grown event has put Cape Town on international map of Queer culture. It is planned over a period of 6 months, and culminates in weekend of celebration and splendid festivity. It has become a cultural phenomenon in the Mother City and attracts 1000′s of visitors to Cape Town annually. International travel agents are chartering planes and planning trips for posses of pink playmates to come and taste our wildlife.
The costume party is formatted as a multi-venue themed fancy-dress art party and is attended by 8000 thousand partygoers – who arrive in teams in matching costumes – somehow related to the theme.
In addition to showcasing the richness of our city’s creativity, the MCQP costume party also kicks in the summer season with a memorably marvelous bash.
And no…being gay is not required…but getting out there and cutting some serious steps is. Get a team together, choose a theme, get the ticket and come along.
Victoria’s secret Christmas ad
Posted on 10. Dec, 2004 by Cassandra.
Christmas is a time for giving….so the brand team at Victoria’s secret have released a viral ad onto the internet.
Featuring big name supermodels and the appropriate backing track, the ad is a perfect example of what a viral ad should have in order to be a success.
Cherryflava picked up some shooting techniques to use for the next time we are invited to photograph a lingerie show.
It’s easy to market something when the product just lends itself to being wanted.
A merry Beckham Christmas

Take a wild guess as to who is playing Mary and Joseph in this year’s Madame Tussauds nativity display?
That’s right Posh and her man Becks…and here’s the showstopper….Tony Blair, George Bush and the Duke of Edinburgh make up the three wise men. OMG what a joke.
Actors Hugh Grant, Samuel L Jackson and comedian Graham Norton play shepherds and singer Kylie Minogue is the angel.
Adding even more fuel to the fire of the absurdity…..the Vatican has taken time out from their campaigns to ban condoms and ignore world hunger, to object to the display…saying that it was "in very poor taste".
No kidding dude…..posh is definately no virgin.
When you get of your own shock and dismay, here are a few more pics of the disaster.
Billionaire kids

Privilaged or cursed….the New York Metro has a great story about the life of Donald Trump’s kids. As far as super rich kids go…it seems these three are still in touch with reality (sorry about that).
The Trumps certainly would not have won any parenting awards when Don Jr. was a child. With Donald busy building his empire and Ivana helicoptering to Atlantic City six or seven days a week to run Trump Castle, there wasn’t a lot of time for helping with homework or taking weekend trips to the park. Ivana hired two Irish nannies, Dorothy and Bridget, to care for the children. But the most important early influence came from Ivana’s Czech parents, Milos and Maria Zelnicek, who lived with the family in Trump Tower for six months out of the year.

Watch out Mike Tyson…these girls might give you a run for your money reputation.
Check out this video of girls beating the daylights out of eachother. It’s good fun….makes Cherryflava wonder if the yanks are the most video crazy people on the planet. We all know the Japanese love their still snap shots, but the American’s seem to video tape everything…from fun in Iraqi prison’s to everyday scuffles……
Go grab the popcorn, kill the phone and enjoy the backing track. Their parents must be proud.
Vodacom looks like Cell C
Posted on 07. Dec, 2004 by Cassandra.
Vodacom is becoming Vodafone and starting to look just like Cell C.
What are the brand people at Vodacom thinking? Have their cellphones finally cooked their brains?
You just might have caught the new Vodafone ads on TV…you know the ones bathed in red…images of Schumacher and Manchester United. What are they advertising? Is this the fourth cell network announcement? No….it just Vodacom’s big brother badly communicating that the new 3G network will be provided by Vodafone. Huh?
It’s no secret that Vodacom and Vodafone joined forces a month ago to become the most powerful cellular network partnership in the world. This strategic decision has provided Vodacom with a platform to offer South African Vodacom cellular users the best global coverage and faster and more advanced communication than ever before.
Who cares. Vodafone is probably going to now spend hundreds of millions of rands in an attempt to get that message into your head.
As long as you can SMS your buddy to meet you for a beer and get a new phone every two years on your upgrade….this waste of money is crazy.
Here’s a great marketing idea choppers. Quit spending R200 million on nice little TV ads and shades of red and rather plough that cash into lowering our call charges. The product will sell itself and we’ll all be laughing.
Don’t be suprised if Yebo Gogo falls off the radar all together and everything starts to look like Cell C.
