Flag design

flagsHere’s an interesting diversion found at Gauteng Blog – someone has ranked and rated the world’s flags.

The criteria for rating are all design related….so flag designers take careful note. The list of flags has all the old favourites, including the South African flag which gets one of the best scores.

It seems like the world’s most well designed flag belongs to Somalia..closely followed by the Vietnamese flag.

But a country’s flag is not just something to flap in the face of the opposing fans at a rugby match, the colours used in flags have meaning:

Red – danger, revolution, bloodshed of war, courage, power

White – peace, surrender, truce

Orange- courage, sacrifice

Green – safety, land, youth, hope

Yellow – caution, gold

Black – mourning, death

The South Africa flag basically has all of those colours wrapped into one…so don’t mess with us.

Sentech sucks already?

sentech Shame…the world of wireless, broadband internet technology is not for sissies. Sentech, the product which was hyped to save us all from the evils of Telkom already sucks.

In fact, the service sucks so bad, that there is already a website dedicated to destroying the young brand.

I’m afraid that I have to inform you that it is now ONE week later after the promised “resolution” by your Technical division, “last Friday”. Sentech’s MyWireless service still sucks, and none of us have received any correspondence aside from the helpdesk telling us that there is still a “network speed issue”.

I find Sentech’s lack of commitment to resolving the problem apalling. What I find even more apalling is that in 12 days time, Sentech will once again bill us for a service that we have not been receiving.

I urge you to raise this matter at the highest level. We have gone from 1% of users (in your statement) to 5% of users (Winston Smith’s statement). I can assure you that the number is growing by the day, especially today, when the service has been generally more useless than ever, over a larger userbase than before.

Even Sentech’s latest customers in Cape Town, that signed up for the service in the last week or two, regardless of the MyADSL forum userbase’s recommendation against it, are experiencing problems.

If Sentech is incapable of resolving the issue, I suggest that you make a public statement to the effect, and retract the sub-standard “Beta” product you currently have in the market.

Regards,
Roelf Diedericks.

Maybe the guys at Sentech should have done a bit more research and testing before launching their product. As the say in the classic…once you have tainted a brand with poor delivery, you might as well pack up shop.

Hangover over

drinking2 Winter is not traditionally a heavy partying time of the year, but those quiet mugs of Irish coffee after the rugby could get the better of you.

To assist with the killing of the cat that made a nest in your mouth, usually experienced the morning after the night before…check out these hangover cures.

From hair of the dog….

Everyone back to the pub? This doesn’t actually cure the hangover it just delays it. After a heavy night out the body is effectivly going through a detox, so by having one or two drinks will help ween you off alcohol (well thats our excuse).

to the hot shower

The morning after the night before, you smell, you ache and your hungover, have a hot shower or bath to bring you back to civilisation.

…you’ll find the cure that’s right after being tight. [Via Dolly]

wimbledonThe June holidays have always been characterised by Wimbledon…which starts today. For two weeks in the year, the sun shines…between downpours…the rich feel richer and the rest of us watch the whole thing on TV.
In the old days, Trevor Quirk would call the games..between sips of vodka and cola…and it was all very exciting to watch the ground crews scamper around centre court when it started to rain.
Today…you can only see the matches if you have DSTV and everybody’s worried that terrorists are going to blowup the grass courts.

All the same, to get you in the mood, here are some interesting facts about the tournament:

112,000 punnets of strawberries are expected to be served during Wimbledon fortnight.
17,000 bottles of champagne will be drunk.
250,000 bottles of water will be drunk.
150,000 glasses of Pimm’s will be drunk.
100,000 pints of lager will be drunk.
30,000 portions of fish and chips will be served.
190,000 sandwiches served.
12,000 kilos of poached salmon will be served.
135,000 hand-held ice creams will be sold.
22,000 slices of pizza eaten.
1,600 catering staff will be on hand.

…and all of this just for the players!

Bill’s book

clinton Former US president Bill Clinton‘s book, entitled…My Life (being original is not one of his strong areas) goes on sale this week.

Early reviews have not been very favourable:

The book, which weighs in at more than 950 pages, is sloppy, self-indulgent and often eye-crossingly dull — the sound of one man prattling away, not for the reader, but for himself and some distant recording angel of history.

…In fact, “My Life” reads like a messy pastiche of everything that Mr. Clinton ever remembered and wanted to set down in print; he even describes the time he got up at 4 a.m. to watch the inaugural ceremonies for Nigeria’s new president on TV. There are endless litanies of meals eaten, speeches delivered, voters greeted and turkeys pardoned…There are some revealing complaints about missteps at the FBI under Louis Freeh’s watch , but there are also dozens of pointless digressions about matters like zombies in Haiti and ruins in Pompeii.

Even so…the book is still expected to debut at No. 1 in the US. Not because everybody is in anyway interested in boring political stuff, but rather to get some juice on the Lewinsky affair.

Bill Clinton said he had his affair with Monica Lewinsky that almost cost him the White House “just because I could,” and deemed it a “terrible moral error.”

So, after being the most powerful man in the world, surviving a career ending ‘moral error’ and now writing a book…what’s next for Bill? Maybe he should start a jazz band with the ex members of Pearl Jam. He could easily be a movie star – acting is definately something he’s good at.
What ever it is, it seems that Bill can’t do anything wrong.

These are the first few pics from the snowboarding trip. All these pics were shot at night in temperatures well below freezing. The clouds of mist in the last two shots, is in fact, the resorts attempts to create snow of their own. Millions of litres of water are pumped through a network of pipes under extreme pressure. The resulting ‘snow’ is dumped on the slopes together with the natural stuff.

Euro2004
The Euro 2004 football tournament in Portugal is not only about the game. [Via Adrants]

Coke has held a contest to solicit scaffold billboard ideas to promote this year’s tournament. With the simple creative brief directive “Create a scaffolding ad that with focus on Coca Cola, will surprise and draw attention to Coke’s engagement in Portugal 2004,” some outstanding creative was developed.

Here is the winner….and here are pics of the runners up.

With World Cup 2010 approaching, Cherryflava wonders what clever African advertising campaigns are going to be promoting the event.
